my response to that would be
"well
if by "argue that they're misunderstood" you mean
"worldbuild an entire culture with moral strictures and social norms very different from our own that lead the characters to value things we consider evil, for reasons that make internal sense to the characters and are hopefully relatable, and try my damndest to get people thinking about things that we would otherwise totally dismiss as horrible in a different light, but not actually change our mind about morality's requirements because yeah, they things they do and the views they hold are in fact, by a standard of morality I do actually consider objective, yep, evil"
then yeah
i suppose you could say not already having the understanding that I hope to create is "misunderstanding"
but hey
