The whole story was inspired by like, 3 lines of text (on the Wiki? It was in some summary someplace, anyway) about how no one (meaning neither major faction) likes the Neutrals. It said something like "Autobots react to them with disdain; Decepticons consider them target practice."
It really got me curious: what would they consider themselves? The easy way out would be to say that they take no side, but their planet is being blown to bits around them. Surely they'd have complex opinions, and complex reasons for not being involved.
Which led me to wondering about what an ex-'Con would be like. The easy characterization would be "She realizes that what she stood for all her life was backwards and wrong and walks away, vowing to fight her dark side and struggle to live honorably."
I... didn't want to do that. :) I just plain like the 'Cons too much to make it that pat.
Not that I don't think it could be done well (I'm sure it has been done well before, and most likely more than once) but I wanted to do something else.
So I decided to talk about someone who understands very well why the 'Cons are disliked at best and totally vilified at worst, but... isn't entirely convinced they're wrong.

I love it when plotbunnies come out of something like that. Especially when they spawn complex character motivations.
Hmm, now I feel like a need a Decepticon sympathiser icon...

Yep. It was like "Whooooooooabunny!" I was in the middle of writing something else. But Nova threatened to crush squishy little me if I didn't write her story too, and I decided it was wisest not to bring the wrath... :)
