Persona 2Character Background: HERE BE SPOILERS
Sumaru, Japan was cursed with rumors turning into reality. Any rumor spread, for good or ill, became real, such as a rumor about the owner of a ramen shop selling weapons and being a former Russian spy. How the curse came about was a mystery, but it served as the driving force behind much of the backstory for many of the characters, perhaps especially Jun Kurosu.
Jun was born to a family with a father as a teacher in Seven Sisters High and a legendary actress for a mother. His mother had suddenly grown tired of being in a family after the birth of her son, and spread vicious rumors about her husband being a deadbeat. Regardless of what she was doing, his father taught him about the constellations, which would later lead into Jun pursuing an interest in horoscopes and fortune telling in general.
When he was around seven, his father took him to a festival. There, Jun met Tatsuya Suou, and quickly became friends with him. Later that same day, Eikichi "Michel" Mishina and Lisa Silverman bumped into the duo, and the four of them formed a play group called the Masked Circle. The rules of their little group was that whenever they met up together at the shrine to play, they had to wear their masks, and whoever was the "boss" for that day decided on what they were going to play. As time past, a high school student named Maya joined their group, and became the big sister to the children.
Whenever asked about his father, Jun would say proudly that his father was the coolest one around, and that he was extremely nice. He had even received a telescope from him, and shared it with his group of friends to teach them about some of the constellations. Yet, on the day he brought out his new telescope to show his friends, a couple of kids went up to them calling Jun a liar. They had heard from their mothers that Jun's father was really a "deadbeat dad." Though his friends stood up for him, Jun was thoroughly embarrassed, and denied that it was the truth, running away from his friends when pressed.
All around, though, he had a wonderful time with his friends. Then, one day, Jun's father died, while he was still seven. Some time after, he gave Tatsuya his father's lighter, a treasure to remind him of how much his father meant to him. In return, he received Tatsuya's father's wristwatch, and promised each other to continue following their dreams. As far as his mother was concerned, she was delighted to be single again, and it was implied that she had many lovers. She hardly ever cared for little Jun, even telling him once while he was a child when his father was still alive that he should never have been born. He was always uncomfortable talking about his mother around his friends, and dodged the subject as much as he could. However, once he told Maya that he would have preferred it if she were his mother instead of his biological one, but said no more on the matter.
Then, something terrible happened at the end of that summer. Maya was moving, and had refrained from telling her friends about it until the day she had to leave. They didn't want her to leave, and so they locked her in the shrine. The kids would have released her the next day, thinking that she wouldn't have to move if she was kept there for one day. Tatsuya had been against it, however. Later that day, a serial and insane arsonist set fire to the shrine and stabbed Tatsuya, who miraculously lived. After that, the kids locked away their memories and hid their masks, vowing to never meet again, believing that Maya had died in that fire.
Years past, and the rumors started to severely change Jun. His memories had also started to awaken, and soon remembered the sin he and his friends had committed. Unbeknownst to the boy, his memories had been altered, and saw Tatsuya set fire to the shrine with his Persona while Jun could only watch.
At some point, he became the Joker, a masked man who granted people's dreams. However, if they couldn't state their dream in time, then he would take that "ideal energy," turning the victim into ambition-less, forgotten shadows. The only ones who could see and remember them were Persona-users.
All the while, Jun bided his time, waiting for when his former friends would call on him. When they finally did, he almost killed them, but refrained when he learned that they had completely forgotten all about that fateful summer's day ten years prior. Jun swore revenge, telling them that he would kill them only when they finally remembered what had happened.
Eventually, the group learned about a group of people led by Joker and four executives (King Leo, Queen Aquarius, Prince Taurus, and Lady Scorpio) called the Masked Circle. They also learned of his true goal, of furthering man's evolution and granting mankind's biggest dream. Xibalba, the spaceship Sumaru City had been built upon, was raised into the sky as four shrines to Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius, and Taurus appeared.
However, Jun was stopped by not only his friends, but Hitler and his Last Battalion, revived through the rumors that spread about his escape from death. It was here that they met Queen Aquarius, but only for a brief moment. One of the 12 anti-Persona soldiers, called a Longinus, attempted to kill Jun, but Queen Aquarius pushed him out of the way and died as a result. Desperate to keep the crystal skulls that held the ideal energy out of Hitler's grasp, Jun ordered the Shadows of Michel, Lisa, and Tatsuya to guard and hide the skulls of water, fire, wind, and earth. Hitler had seized control of the Heaven Skull.
After, there was a fight between the group of protagonists and Joker. They tried reasoning with him, telling him that the memories he had of Tatsuya killing Maya were false and that she was still alive. However, the Crawling Chaos, the thing that was pulling the strings of fate, had a firm grip over Jun. Eventually, after defeating him, Jun came to his senses, his memories seemingly restored to what they used to be. He apologized to them all for being "an arrogant fool."
That was when Jun's father appeared before them. When he refused to go back to being the Joker and tried to reason with his father, the man rejected him and took away the thing that had been within Jun, a being called Nyarlathotep.
After the confrontation, the group was summoned by Philemon, and Yukino, a good friend of Maya's, gave her Persona to Jun. With the five reunited at long last, they were ready to face the challenge presented to them. Philemon then transported them to the shrine where it had all began, and Jun informed the group that they needed to get the skulls back. They were the key, and without them they could do nothing to stop Xibalba or Hitler.
First, they went to the Aquarius Shrine. Three Longinus were waiting for them, and upon defeating them, one of the soldiers implied that perhaps Jun's memory was still wrong, and asked if he even knew who Queen Aquarius really was. It was also after this battle that his Persona, Hermes, could become the more powerful Chronos. It was after this victory that he found himself in Wonderland.
Abilities/Special Powers: Jun is able to summon a Persona, an extension of himself. Chronos gives him an immunity to wind, dark, and light attacks and specializes in wind spells. He also has one healing ability that heals a group almost to full health, and an attack that is a combination of wind and light. However, he has a crippling weakness to earth. In addition, Jun's Persona can detect if there's danger or if there's something terrifyingly powerful nearby. It can also detect if there are Persona-users within his vicinity.
His weapon of choice are flowers, which deal "thrown" damage, a sub-type of physical attacks.
Third-Person Sample:
When Jun walked through those heavy double-doors, he had expected to be within the Shrine to retrieve the third skull. Instead, he found himself within the grand foyer of what could be a mansion. The brunet was confused, to say the least. He couldn't sense Philemon's presence, so he hadn't been summoned by the masked man. Chronos wasn't scared, either, and therefore it wasn't necessarily the Crawling Chaos.
He wasn't sure what to think, quite honestly. Jun turned to see what his four friends thought of this, but they weren't there. Dread settled into a pit in his stomach as he glanced all around the foyer. None of his friends were there, and he couldn't sense their familiar presence.
What's…going on? The boy thought, completely baffled by this turn of events. He prayed his friends were alright, and set off to explore the mansion a little bit. Jun didn't want to get lost and stuck close to the rooms near the entrance, at least until he got his bearings. He clung to the hope that perhaps he couldn't sense them because something was blocking their Personae, and that they might already be in the building.
First-Person Sample:
[Jun is looking at the device dubiously, as if he's not entirely sure that this thing is even working.]
Um…excuse me, but…could someone tell me where I am? And how exactly I got here?
[Is this Philemon's doing? Or even the Crawling Chaos'? His Persona isn't reacting as though the Crawling Chaos is around, so perhaps….]
Also, has anyone seen my friends? Tatsuya, Lisa, Eikichi, and Maya? We were together before…well, this happened.
[Chronos doesn't sense them or anybody familiar nearby, but that might not mean they aren't here, right? Right. After a brief second, he bows.]
Thank you for your help.
[He cuts the transmission and hopes for a swift reply, counting good news as a bonus.]
