Holy wow! We won our game last night! First time Downingtown West Girls Hockey Team, for the three years we've had a team, has ever won. It was fantastic!!!
Sammy and I started on defense. Neither of us had played in about 2 weeks, cause we were both sick for practise last week. So we were both kind of out of it, and on the same pairing together. In the first minute, the other team scored two goals. The second one I was skating backwards and just fell over. It was embarrassing. As soon as they blew the whistle, I thought to myself, "It's over. There's no chance. This is going to be awful." We got off the ice and just sat there, dejected. The next few minutes went well though. We were back on the ice, in the offensive zone (by their goalie). I was at the blue line, and the puck popped back to me from Marissa. I took it, and kind of avoided one girl. I was about to skate further when I heard, "Who is on her?!" coming from the other coach. I guess I panicked, I remember thinking, "Oh no, I have to get rid of this!" So I flung it towards the goal. Well, whaddaya know, it went in. It was really exciting. But then the ref didn't blow the whistle. And when he finally did, he didn't make any motions or anything, just a simple short whistle. So I thought, maybe the goalie had it covered. I was a bit disappointed. As I got back to the bench, I turned around. They were starting back at center ice. It was a goal. My coach was excited, and said, "That was your first goal ever!" I sat down on the bench, turned around and said, "That wasn't exciting like I thought it'd be."
The rest of the game was pretty exciting. We got within one, then we tied it up. We were killing our penalties. We had more shots on net than the other team. We were actually keeping it in the offensive zone for a period of time. Then, all of a sudden, with 8 minutes left, Marra scored and we were up 5-4. It was an amazing feeling. We had never been ahead before. But we still had 8 minutes left. So we called a timeout, and Coach told us to play a defensive game from now on, and showed us how to be positioned and all. We did a cheer ("For Jon!" -other coach who comes back from Kuwait today! He's been gone all season) and got back on the ice. The next few minutes were so intense! I was so scared the whole time. I could feel the adrenaline running through my body, and I felt like I was going to have a heart attack any moment. I was out of breath just watching what was happening. Then, with 1:45 left, Lindsay gets a penalty. Oh my goodness, I was so scared! But we killed it off. As the buzzer went off, we were all on the ice, skating towards our goalie. She held her arms out and we all just tackled her. I fell on top of Lindsay, and then Maura fell on me. We all just hugged each other and laughed and screamed. Our coaches came over, along with Emmy (she broke her arm and wasn't allowed to play). I hugged her real big. She was sad that she couldn't've played, but so happy to be there. It was an amazing night. We got a picture of the scoreboard to show everyone. :D It was great.
>>>sidenote. So during the game, me and this one girl were kind of going at it. I had forced her off the puck on a semi-breakaway towards the beginning of the game. After the whistle blew, she turns to me and says, "Watch your body!" I wanted to say something back, but I couldn't think of anything and the refs were watching me, so I just laughed in her face. Then later, the puck was at the boards and I was going for it. She came up behind me, and pushed me, but I was strong on my skates and she lost her balance and fell into the boards. I got the penalty for boarding! That was ridiculous. I was between her and the boards. There was no way I could have pushed her into the boards unless I had turned around, grabbed her jersey and thrown her. Absolute bull. But whatever. We killed it off. =) Then later we were both going into the boards for the puck. Somehow we fell, and she was on top of me (I didn't know it was her at this point). I was trying to get up, but she was holding me down. She got up and started to skate away, then realised the puck was still there. So she came back to try and get it (I was still on the ground at this point) and as she skated away she punched/pushed me in the back of the head. Uncalled for. So we were having some issues all game. And then at the end, when we were high-fiving, she grabs my hand and pulls me backwards and says, "Watch your body next game!" all pissed. I wanted to just get up in her face and be like "Okay first, there is no 'next game.' And second, ice hockey is a contact sport. If you can't handle it, go play field hockey." But I just ignored her, kind of acted like I didn't hear her and went to celebrate with my team, which I think made her mad anyway. What a loser.<<<
