dorky comic book love!!1

so am i the last person to find out that a history of violence was originally a dc comic (or technically, graphic novel) from like 1988?? the only reason i even found that out was from reading some old comics and seeing an ad for it. they didn't really advertise that aspect of the movie, i suppose. it's sorta funny that the movie was relatively successful, and people were praising it for being so timely and topical, considering the original story is almost 20 years old.

(WARNING: from here on in, if you don't read comics, you'll probably be completely lost)

secondly, i bought a bunch of comics last year, and am just now getting to sit down and read most of them... and i came across something interesting in Justice League #4 (from August of 1987). Maxwell Lord was the one that that engineered the creation of that incarnation of the league, and in that issue, Maxwell Lord says to Dr. Light (the female asian hero, not the crazy one that raped sue dibny): "I have a master plan. For you. For Booster. For the League. When my plan finally comes together, you'll see that the ends justify the means." now i'm about 20 issues further in the series, and haven't really found any explanation of what that plan was... which makes me wonder... with Maxwell Lord's manipulation of Superman in the "sacrifice" storyline, and subsequently managing to undermine the public's trust in superheroes, if that line wasn't some sort of extreme foreshadowing... and if Lord hadn't been planning all this right from the start. it seemed like it was something he'd had in the works for a long time. i know it's definitely an *extreme* long shot, considering the two storylines are separated by over 15 years, but still.

and i'd also like to share with you a spread i saw recently that really impressed me... i saw it in Deadman #7 (1985 series), but those were reprint editions of deadman's old stories, so i'm not sure exactly where it first appeared.

spreads like this really makes me realize the potential of sequential art. i especially love the lip/eye in the first panel.
