A long-overdue (and disorganised) picspam

Apr 12, 2009 22:37

I can't believe this was last September. That's almost two years ago. Because of the ridiculous delay, these pics aren't all that organised - they're all out of order, in a jumble, and I'm not even sure where exactly some of them were taken. /o\ AND TASH I STILL OWE YOU YOUR COPIES, I'LL SEND THEM IMMEDIATELY, help me remember plz?

LOOK AT THAT HAPPY FACE :DD

Tokyo!

I enjoyed bustling, bright, busy Tokyo much more than the terrifying fashionable stillness of Ginza. (Of course, we went to Ginza at... well, probably before nine am, thanks to a combination of jetlag, getting up early for the fish market, and slightly-lost wandering. SO MAYBE IT'S NOT USUALLY SILENT AND TERRIFYING, IDK.)

Tokyo at night:

The Roppongi Spider. Apparently there are one of these in Seoul, too, which is pretty cool. Terrifying giant arachnids in capital cities are always a good sign; Edinburgh should have one.

I... THINK this pic is also from Tokyo. I might be wrong. I remember that there was a very earnest religious dude in front of the white van, giving out leaflets or talking about Jesus, but this doesn't help me locate it.

There were shrines all over the place, too. This one was at the massive fish-market in Tokyo we visited at an insanely early time in the morning.

At the shrines, you could leave little blocks with your wishes or prayers on them - there were hundreds, in loads of different languages. :D

Japan is the first place I've visited where you can go from this

to this

within no time at all. ... of course, the insanely awesome public transport probably has a lot to do with that, BUT STILL.

This was the temple district of Kyoto (Nanzen-ji? I THINK? DON'T HOLD ME TO THIS STUFF GUYS I'M AN IGNORANT TOURIST /o\). I don't have any pics of the shrines etc on hand, but I had a mildly religious experience around them - I don't know if it's just Catholicism hard-wired into me, but I had a very strong gut holy shit this place is special, I should be praying' reaction.

I think my favourite day in Japan was when we went to Himeji Castle. It's absolutely beautiful - I took about five billion pictures, but here's just a few.

We also went to Hiroshima, which was humbling.

The main impression I'm going to keep from Kyoto was of getting horrifically, terrifyingly lost. It was the only time I've ever been lost (and believe me, this happens a fair bit) that I've actually thought 'oh my god, what are we going to do'.

This pic gives me a beautiful smiling face every time I see it. :DDDD
