"A patriot must always be ready to defend his country from his government." - Edward Abbey
I'm using this quote to point out that a country is not its government. I hate the current executive branch and I think there are a lot of problems with congress as well. But I believe in the spirit that is America: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and all that good stuff. China may be the world's upcoming economic superpower, but they will never be a world leader (or god help us if they do) because of their complete failure to observe fundamental human rights.
My point is: I LOVE AMERICA! (and so should you!) Sure, sure, we haven't got everything perfect, but as you so delicately pointed out in this post, we sure have things a hell of a lot better here than they do over there.
I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that the Olympics are in China. Even gigantic, powerful, evil empires have to be thrown a bone every once in a while. And as you pointed out, I think it's shown how superficially perfect China is and how truly shitty it is once one digs a bit deeper.
