It is one of those oddities of life that you go along not knowing about something but then when you hear about it suddenly you notice it everywhere. I had one of those moments over the last weeks.
It started with my reading some LJ thread or other (can't remember which now) and someone recommended the Tanya Huff books (specifically the 'Smoke and *' series). Being bored I had a look on Amazon and they looked fun so I added them to my 'maybe something to remember for the future' list. Then in short order they came up at the slash meet up we had at
jhava's and
ithidrial posts the first few episodes of the TV show based on her books.
I wasn't massively impressed by the TV show (the vampire was great but the rest was a bit so-so) although The Blonde loved it and has been demanding I get her more. However since I had to order the Temeraire books from Amazon for The Blonde I gave into temptation and got myself a cheap copy of Smoke and Shadows while I was at it.
Bwhahahahaha
It is like the book equivelent of a cult Canadian TV show (and even has the same actors). I don't mean that it a bad way (although
kludge would probably disagree given his opinion on some of the Canadian shows I like) it just has that same (low budget) cheerfulness and humour. Yes, it isn't exactly great literature or anything but I was pretty much giggling for the entire book (Blonde thought I was nuts until I explained and then she demended I finish the book asap and hand it over to her). Stuff that makes me think is good but, sometimes, it is nice to read something that just makes you smile.
Now just waiting for Amazon to deliver me the other books :-)
[EDIT
Just had conversation with Blonde that went something like this:
Blonde: You're evil! That book is great, I couldn't stop laughing.
Me: So you liked it then?
Blonde: I haven't finished it yet - L wouldn't let me. He said we were having I quiet weekend together and so no reading at him or WOW. We went out to dinner and the book was in my bag taunting me.
Me: *explains why Tony not going to be in current TV show and no Henry if they ever do a 'Smoke and *' TV series*
Blonde: *Agrees that licencing is sucky*
Me: Of course if they did make it they would have problems with the casting if they didn't or couldn't go for the obvious casting choice...
Blonde: *confused* For who?
Me: Gee 6"1', dark hair, green eyes... I wonder what Canadian actor people might have in mind for Lee Nic...
Blonde: OMG! *catches clue* ROFLAO It isn't even subtle is it!
Me: Well you missed it.
Blonde: But he's straight!
Me: To the best of my knowledge so is Nick Lea - I don't see how this is a problem.
Blonde: But err *grumble*...
I'm still not entirely clear what was going through her head at the end there but I think I might have totally broken her. Something about too many pretty boys. *snicker*
