still me, again
something more about Albin

la cage aux folles had been running on stage for 20 years before the first movie was released
so whem albin was created, michel Serrault was no older than JB !

Really? I just had to check because I remembered the film was late 70's and thought there is no way that play could have run in the 50's and the only info I can find online puts the play at 1973. The film is 78 so if it were 20 years that would be 1958, which seems extraordinary.

ok, right I shouldn't trust my memory and check before writing things, but anyway in 73 Serault was 45, so just 3 years older than JB, and this I cheked
(Michel Lucien Serrault est un acteur français né le 24 janvier 1928)

Wow so he is 81. If still alive? That makes me feel very old. This play must have been amazing in 73. I imagine he did a great job of it, he really was very good in the film. I can't think if I've seen him in anything else, but they were both really great actors.

Serrault died in 2007
Tognazzi, who was Renato in the movie died in 1990
and Poiret who wrote the play and was George in it, died 1992.
They were three amazing actors

Serrault had won a lot of cezars, the first one was for Zaza, it was a revolution!
And even if that movie was mostly a caricature, it got people to look at those Folles as human, that had been for a good part because of Serrault job, but anyway I still find his Zaza too much pitiful

Although i think that is the point. He is meant to be like that because there are characters like that, and more so at that time. Also his dignity is extraordinary, especially in the frumpy mum scene. I saw the movie for the first time in the 80's and it had a big effect on me. I do know some men like him, one of my friends who does a lot of drag is very like that, and also has that strength when needed, but the outrageous "screaming queen" side a lot of the time.

Sounds like they all died quite young really, given people's life expectancy nowadays.

I feel bad because I'm not au fait enough with French actors, I do have a thing at the moment for Daniel Auteuil. In fact The Closet is also a kind of interesting take on sexuality. Still, a bit of a segue here..

right for Poiret and Tognazzi : they were in their mid fifty (I'm fifty two)help ! Serrault a bit older nearly got to his 80, not so old now our days

love Daniel Auteuil too : he's very good
but I haven't seen the closet

If you understand french I could give you some titles to look for

Oh my French is from school so pretty bad, although often with French films I have that strange thing where you understand a lot of it, but couldn't manage without subtitles, so I could only watch films with English subtitles.

My favourite film of Daniel A is Cache, which is truly superb, but I haven't seen all of his, really only those shown here at the cinema.

The Closet is interesting, he has to pretend to be gay, I can't remember the set up actually, something to do with Gerard Depardieu and their workplace.
