Musings on spring, dental appliances, and drummers.

It's April first, cue the summer weather to start rolling in. I've been taking advantage of a week of beautiful days by taking nice long walks around my neighborhood, and it got me wondering- when did spring in Nashville become one of my favorite things? I mean, favorite favorite, ranking up there with popcorn, goat cheese, and Irish music. When did this happen? How is it that I've lived here long enough to learn the rhythms of the seasons? Wasn't it just yesterday I was 21, completely green, new in town, and hating everything about Nashville? Huh. Weird.

In other news, I have new dental appliances in my mouth. Just for fun, because orthodontic technology has moved forward so much since the days when I had headgear and braces that I didn't want to get out of touch with the new shiny torture devices. So now I have clear plastic retainers that slip over my teeth, and will do the work of braces without the mess of brackets and wires. Because someone got lazy and stopped wearing her retainer at night... You'd think after 9 years of wearing it my darn teeth would remember where they belong! But no, they think moving around to new and interesting places in my mouth is fun, so now I'm talking funny and complaining how the retainers are slicing my gums and tongue. Seriously, I feel like I'm 12 all over again. Guess who will be wearing her nighttime retainers for the rest of her life after this procedure is over? Um yeah, that would be me.

And yet another topic jump. Concerning drummers. My feelings about drums have been mixed for a long time, tending to err on the side of not liking them very much except for judicious hand percussion and the occasional bodhran. (Though I don't mind them in the context of Mustang Sally, after all country and rock would sound a bit odd without them!) Imagine my surprise when I went to a jam session on Sunday and played with a percussionist who made me love snare with brushes. Just... what a groove! Playing felt effortless, I was in heaven. Admittedly this guy is one of the best percussionists in Nashville, which may have had something to do it it. But I guess I'm a drum fan now. Interesting.

And now we have reached the end of my musings for the moment.
