So many tunes...

This community has been pretty quiet lately, so I thought I'd post in an attempt to liven it up a bit.

So, first a site rec. If anyone hasn't found it yet, you should check out Tune Finder. It's a great resource. It's only failed me three or four times - if you want the tune Great Big Sea plays as "Eavesdropper's Jig" you're out of luck, ( Read more... )

Nothing I'm learning myself (as I'm a complete beginner)...but some of my favourite tunes:

Catharsis...a great modern tune...check out Natalie MacMaster's album, No Boundaries, for a rockin' version of it.

Tam Lin...my absolute favourite tune, hands down. Another one that rocks, especially if you bring out the rising line in the beginning, and start soft and crescendo through to the B section. So far the best recording I've heard of it is by Catriona MacDonald...my ex's version is better, IMO, but not on an album or anything...yet.

Julia Delaney...another one of my favourites...there's a great recording on the Ring Sessions CD with James Kelly and Zan MacLeod.

The Drunken Sailor...my favourite hornpipe (this from someone who really does NOT like hornpipes). It's on Liz Carroll's album, Lost in the Loop, which I am currently missing and getting frustrated with...no idea where it could have disappeared to!

Unfortunately, I can't play ANY of these tunes on whistle (not in the right key) and they'd probably lose something amazing if I did anyway. But go fiddle players! Learn them! They're awesome.

Catharsis is a great tune! It was the first tune I learned from the Portland... There's a tune called Homage a Edmond Parizeu (spelling? I have no idea if that's right!!!) but it's a really great tune, and fun to play.
