Nine was considerably more cooperative for this one...a bit too much so, you might say, as I ended up screencapping him approximately six billion times.
The beginning of this episode is just gorgeous: the green light, the bravado of the Doctor, Rose being totally impressed and trying really hard to pretend she's not. They're both deep in their crushing on each other right now, and they're both trying extra-hard to look ultra-cool and avoid giving that away. At this point, I don't think the Doctor believes she'll travel with him beyond one trip, so he's trying to cram as much AMAZING into one trip as he can manage. And there's also a modicum of "Here's something that can help you relate to me - I'll take you to watch your planet burn!" as well, which is endearing, and more than a little disturbing.
And I just want to point out - if the Doctor weren't so immensely pissed off and hurt at Rose in Father's Day, he might remember that she actually asked to go forward in time first, not back.
"I am so impressive!" See? He comes right out and says it!
Rose just looks beautiful throughout this entire episode. Time travel agrees with her, I think.
Such an iconic shot.
He's absolutely right - I don't believe in any shape or form that this planet will survive until the year 5 Billion.
Blame the ridiculous amount of screencaps in this one on just how beautiful these two insist upon looking, every second.
You can almost see Rose's thought process: Seriously - and you thought this would be a hot first date, WHY?!
Ah, back in the days when the Mill had, like, one episode to blow their wad on, and this was it.
Again: love how amused and impressed he is when she trots out Teh Smarts, asking about why the continents aren't shifted and why it isn't taking hundreds of years for the sun to expand.
You'll find that there's just a lot of shots of Rose and Nine talking and gazing at each other in this review/picspam, because there was just a ton of it in this episode and they're both so lovely and, yeah...
"The Doctor plus one. I'm the Doctor, this is Rose Tyler - she's my 'plus one'." *sigh*
Not a great shot of Rose, but the Doctor was just too cute here, not to screencap it.
Only a show like Doctor Who could introduce a character that is a walking, talking tree and make me think 'God, she's gorgeous!'
Love the repeated looks the Doctor gives Rose as the guests are introduced. He's just watching her expression, totally living vicariously through her bewilderment.
"I give you air from my lungs." "How intimate." "There's more where that came from!" "I bet there is."
Even trees are not immune to Teh Hotness that is the Doctor.
The Face of Boe! I did not cry when he died in Series 3. No sir, not a bit. *sniff*
Heheh. This screencap is so wrong, but it made me laugh so hard that I had to include it.
Love the Doctor just cracking up when they see Cassandra for the first time.
Even still, he seems to grok right away that there's something off about that ostrich egg...
I LOVE Soft Cell.
Jabe's little coo-ing, bleeping machine is adorable. It does make me wonder though: did it identify him as Gallifreyan, or as a 'Time Lord'? Because, aren't all Gallifreyans not Time Lords, but all Time Lords are Gallifreyan, and so forth? Head. Hurts.
Rafallo! Beginning a long tradition of Rose commiscerating with the 'lower class'. Bless.
Rose begins to realize that she's just run away from home and, basically, gotten in a car with a strange man. Stranger Danger, Rose!
Some shots of the robot spiders. Because they're important. And Stuff.
Although, this shot is pretty creepy.
Give it up for Rose, though. She's making an effort, even as weirded out as she is - she's trying to communicate with the plant, because her entire world has just been turned upside down and who knows? Maybe it can understand her! Rose just rocks.
Is this in English because the TARDIS is translating?
It's the little touches about this show that I love. Like how the spiders jostle the 'camera' when they crawl by it.
He's so oblivious. He can't understand why she would possibly be a little freaked out right now, he just thinks it's a great show. At least her planet's burning naturally, and not in battle, right?
And Rose, Rose is so on edge right now she's just kind of spoiling for a fight and looking for anything to get upset about, and he gives her the perfect oppourtunity.
But still...again with the body language. He's as relaxed around her as he could possibly be. I'm surprised he doesn't just strip down, at this point.
But something's wrong - she's not LOVING this AMAZING gift he's given her! Human women, huh?
Compare this conversation to the one between Martha and the Doctor in Gridlock. Rose has a very valid point - she's entrusted her safety to him, and she wants to know Who the Fuck He Is. Martha is just being bitchy because she has a crush on him and wants to know more about him.
Aww. Angry Doctor.
The sort of bitter expression he gets when she refers to him as the 'designated driver' always twists my heart.
But he can't help himself. Even when he's pissed off at her, he wants her to be happy. He wants this to be good for her. He doesn't want her to be afraid.
"On top of the world." And just like that, they're okay again.
"That's not supposed to happen."
Poor Steward. Bye, Steward.
What's really interesting about this particular episode is that Rose is taken out of the picture, and Jabe is, for all intents and purposes, the stand-in companion. And for once I don't mind, because dude, I LOVE Jabe.
Just a reminder of how new their 'relationship' is - Rose doesn't even think to get jealous. Well...maybe a little bit.
I just love the dynamic between the Doctor and Jabe. She would have made a brilliant companion. Which kind of has me hoping that, perhaps, the Doctor's next companion could be an alien, and not a human? That'd be something different, at least.
Rose getting all snarky with the 'bitchy trampoline'. Which, while I appreciate, is really kind of uncalled for at this junction, I think. I think Rose is just feeling very protective of her humanity, right now.
Such a lovely exchange. "Perhaps a man only craves danger when he has nothing left." Oh, Jabe. You have nailed it, my dear.
There is (rightfully so) much ado made about Tennant's facial acting. But check out Eccleston's:
I'm 99% sure those are real tears, too.
That is an impressive bit of air conditioning.
I despise Brittney Spears, but damn if I don't love this song after its use in this episode. It works, somehow.
How times change. Rose is in mortal danger, and the Doctor is just kind of "Hang on, I'm working on it!" A few weeks later, he'd fucking FREAK OUT and rip through that door with his fingernails, you know he would.
"Talk to the Face, talk to the Face!" Heh.
The Doctor tears off the same arm that backhanded Rose earlier. Coincidence? I think not.
"What'dyou gonna do, moisturize me?" Heh. If I thought it wasn't possible to love Nine any more, I was wrong.
Jabe being badass. "Then you'll burn with us!"
"You lot: just chill!" It took me, like, 20 viewings to catch that.
So hard to watch, this scene. I, literally, gasped "NO!" during Journey's End when they showed a flashback of Jabe during this part.
Poor Jabe. Bye, Jabe. :(
The Doctor gets all Time Lord-y.
And time seems to slow down for Rose, as well.
More gorgeous work from the Mill. How much crap have we seen the Earth go through, these last four years?
Remember how you asked if it was always this dangerous, and he said 'Yeah'? He meant it.
Another rareity: we see the Doctor explaining and apologizing for a death that he feels directly responsible for.
And here comes the Oncoming Storm. I know it's moments like this that Ten had in mind when he left alt!Ten with Rose and asked her to make him better, the way she did him, years before.
"Help her." "Everything has its time and everything dies." Quite a different tune from "You can spend the rest of your life with me, but I can't spend the rest of mine with you", isn't it?
I have always been amazed how Eccleston seems to drop like fifteen years from his visage when he walks away from Rose right here.
Such a beautiful moment. You all know the dialogue, so I'll just let the pictures speak for themselves.
How long do you think he stood there, watching her?
This is that moment. The moment we've seen so many companions have, where they know they can't go back. How could she go work at Finch's now? She can either become depressed and fatalistic, having watched her world burn and die, or she can get out there, become better, make him better. Love him, because there's no one else left who will.
For once, they are standing still while everyone else is moving.
"My planet's gone. It burned like the Earth. Before its time." Such a heartfelt and spontaneous confession. He wants her to know this, and he hopes so desperately that she'll still stay with him, but he offers her an out.
God Almighty. Let's just take a moment to admire these blue eyes. Have you ever seen anything like it?!
"I'm left traveling on my own 'cause there's no one else." "There's me." That, right there? Is 'I love you'.
And oh...how can you not fall in love with the two of them after this? You can SEE the misery just melt away from his face.
OTP. You bet your fucking life.
