YOU GUYS. I am reading the best book! And it has nothing to do, even in a roundabout way, with Doctor Who! Do you KNOW how long it's been since I read anything like that?!
Book is
John Dies @ the End by "David Wong" (actual author is Jason Pargin). When they have comments in the front that say stuff like "OMG YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PUT THIS BOOK DOWN", I usually don't believe it, but it's true! I've devoured the first 3 chapters and a pretty long prologue in the last two days, and considering the amount of time I have to actually read that's pretty impressive. From Amazon: In this reissue of an Internet phenomenon originally slapped between two covers in 2007 by indie Permutus Press, Wong-Cracked.com editor Jason Pargin's alter ego-adroitly spoofs the horror genre while simultaneously offering up a genuinely horrifying story. The terror is rooted in a substance known as soy sauce, a paranormal psychoactive that opens video store clerk Wong's-and his penis-obsessed friend John's-minds to higher levels of consciousness. Or is it just hell seeping into the unnamed Midwestern town where Wong and the others live? Meat monsters, wig-wearing scorpion aberrations and wingless white flies that burrow into human skin threaten to kill Wong and his crew before infesting the rest of the world. A multidimensional plot unfolds as the unlikely heroes drink lots of beer and battle the paradoxes of time and space, as well as the clichés of first-person-shooter video games and fantasy gore films. Sure to please the Fangoria set while appealing to a wider audience, the book's smart take on fear manages to tap into readers' existential dread on one page, then have them laughing the next.
Yeah. It's bizarre. And fun. And scary. I'm loving it.
Anyway, I'm also reading Judgment of the Judoon, which I didn't have time to really get into before picking up the above book and getting sucked in, and Murder in Samarkand, which is good but SO MIND-NUMBINGLY DRY I'm having a hard time making any headway in it. Seriously, when a chapter starts with (paraphrased) "Let me tell you a bit about the agriculture of Uzbekistan...", my brain literally says "Well you can stick around if you want, but I'm outta here." We also picked up John Connolly's
The Gates at the same time as John, which Mr. gin said is fun but very much reads like a children's book, so I may give that a go next.
So anyway. John Dies @ the End. Highly recommended (well, I assume. Like I said, only 3 chapters in, so I'm hoping it doesn't suddenly turn into crap).
ETA: And now that I'm through chapter 5, I'm amending my review to say it's also FREAKING ME THE HELL OUT. I had to put it down for awhile, 'cause I'm home alone at the moment and the slightest noise was giving me a panic attack. So yeah, not for the faint of heart. :O
Anyone else reading anything good?
