Picspam: Rose is Awesome

Oct 03, 2009 08:16

A post of ladychi's recently reminded me that there is, still, a baffling amount of Rose-hate out there. Pretty much from the moment I got into the show, I started seeing the Rose-hate...inexplicable, irrational, and just plain obnoxious, it poisons what could otherwise be some very intriguing conversations. It's the reason I have boycotted TWoP for the last two years now, when I used to go there everyday. It destroys friendships and just generally makes the world an unhappy place to be in. Why the hate? Rose is AWESOME!

I have compiled a picspam to prove it! And it goes a little something like this...

10 Reasons Why Rose Tyler is Awesome

1. This is going to sound silly, but: she works

When I was 19, I was living off of my college fund and spending it all on hookers and blow (exaggerated only slightly). Rose, who we know dropped out of school and lost a bunch of money, is actually working for a living when we meet her, not just sponging off of her mum. She has character, she has a work ethic, and she works at a job she hates to at least make an effort to earn her keep. That's awesome!

2. She thinks on her feet

This is one of the many reasons I would fail as a companion. When my boyfriend has turned to plastic and had his head pulled off, I would never have the presence of mind to hit the fire alarm and get everyone out. When the guy sitting next to me on a spaceship suddenly turns into Satan, I myself would weep and pee my pants instead of thinking to unfasten his seatbelt and break out the windscreen to suck him into space. When a missle's been launched at me, I'd crumple up on the floor and have a Comic Book Guy "Oh, I've wasted my life" moment instead of thinking to look for a small closet to withstand the impact. Rose may not have the A-levels, but she's got street smarts out the wazoo, and it saves her and the Doctor's asses many times.

3. She's compassionate

Alien or human, animal vegetable or mineral, Rose is kind to other creatures. She questions the Ood being subservient a full two seasons before the Doctor does. She sympathizes with and extends an offer of help to a werewolf. She begs for Cassandra's life minutes after the flap of skin has tried to kill everyone, including Rose herself. When the Doctor says that Rose made him better, this is what he means: she doesn't just stop him, she inspires him with her acts of kindness, and her humanity.

4. She's badass

At the same time, Rose will lay you out and kick your ass, if she needs to. For all that the Doctor abhors violence, occasionally (pretty frequently, actually), it's necessary to crack some skulls when travelling through time and space, and Rose is perfectly happy to do so using a chain, a nail gun, a fire extinguisher or a council axe.

5. She's imperfect

Some companions, I won't say who because unlike the Rose hatas, I am above the mindless companion-bashing, but some were, IMO, made out to be entirely too Perfect, to the point of fault. Rose fucks up...quite frequently, in early episodes. This is actually awesome, because a companion who never drops the ball is impossible to relate to, and can never learn or grow.

6. She has fun

Because saving the universe should be fun as well as sad and scary. The Doctor says, much later, that the worse it gets the more he loves it, and Rose is right there with him. Rose enjoys the danger, and the only time she ever entertains the idea of leaving the Doctor is when she becomes afraid that he might leave her first.

7. She's hot

Well? She is! But in a very realistic way, which is awesome. She's got big teeth, clumpy mascara, small tits and not much of an ass to speak of. And I think she's gorgeous.

8. She's brave

"Someone's gotta be the Doctor."

Another area in which I would fail as a companion. Rose is not afraid to look danger in the eye, to face the end of the universe, to fight scary monsters, to, as in the picture above, literally laugh in the face of death. She has thrown back her head and walked out of the TARDIS to face an army of Daleks not once, but twice, and shouts down the Sycorax on Christmas day even when she thinks the Doctor is dying and the fate of humanity is at stake. She never wavers, she never begs for her life - her only concern is for the rest of the world, and the Doctor. Which brings us to...

9. She loves the Doctor

"I made up my mind a long time ago, and I'm never gonna leave you."

Of course, I could post hundreds of pictures demonstrating how Rose loves the Doctor, but the above scene is my favourite. On one side of the Void is her perfect family, the one she's always wanted and never had. On the other is death and destruction, and the Doctor. And she doesn't. Even. Hesitate. At a time in his life when he felt least deserving of love from anyone or anything, Rose loved him immediately and unconditionally, even when he changed his face. She loved him and she reminded him of why he carried on, forgave him when he couldn't forgive himself. She has saved his life, risked her life for him, crossed universes for him...she loves that daft alien, and that makes her awesome, because he deserves it.

10. Bad Wolf

Martha walked the Earth for a year. Donna (briefly) became the Doctor. Rose absorbed the Time Vortex and projected a message to herself throughout all of time and space. With nothing but love and gritty determination (and a transdimensional timeship), a 19-year-old shopgirl changed the entire freakin' universe. Yeah. That's awesome.

In conclusion: suck it, Rose haters. You're just jealous. :)
