That'd be an interesting AU... What would have happened had Mary told John what was going on...
She really is an extremely tragic figure in the Winchesters' world. Yes, she made a deal with a demon. But she did it to save someone she loved, just like John and Dean and (arguably) Sam would later. But rather than share the burden with John, she took it upon herself, knowing what was likely to happen in ten years time. She might not have wanted to be alone, but she was certainly alone in that.
I question it sometimes - whether she saved John because she loved him (so it was for his sake) or whether it was because she didn't want to be alone (for her own sake). She was only 18 or 19 at the time, so I think she can be forgiven for making a selfish choice under stress, even if she should have known better.
But yes, she did start a questionable family tradition, didn't she?
This is a great way to explain why Mary may have let her guard down (at least for the previous six months). I'd probably expect a demon to show up ten years to the second.
I'd really love to see them do an episode where the boys ask her why she didn't tell John the truth - someone who was a decorated combat veteran. Show spends so much time blaming John for things, and yet they never question what Mary did!
