This is awesome and heartbreaking.

How do you decorate a room with salad?\

I don't know what I like, either

I am glad Sam loves it.

Thank you! I have to admit, I got a little teary-eyed writing that bit at the end. Oh, BOYS.

Oh this is perfect and so telling in the fact that Dean doesn't know what Sam likes really nor does Sam so the fact that it is barren doesn't matter but I think that the little touches (fixing the plugs and the ipod dock, etc) says much more and matters!

When you guys were all asking about Sam's room, I thought, "But I can't do it - I have no clue what Dean would put in there!"

Then I just decided to roll with it - that Dean didn't know what to put in there, either! Glad you liked the results. :)

I really do and you know what? This is one of the reasons why I am unhappy with the show in general. There is so much little things that we know about Dean and we don't know about Sam. But in your fic it does work because when you think about it--Sam probably didn't have his own anything or interests that were constant and could be defined as his.

So while Dean knows Sam inside out, he doesn't know him fully because SAM doesn't know what are his likes and dislikes if that makes sense

Hmm - I don't think it's so much that Sam doesn't have interests - I'm thinking they're just not as tangible as Dean's are. (Cars, vintage rock, anime, burgers and pie, chasing pretty girls, that sort of thing.) Sam seems to have found his Nirvana in that giant collection of books, particularly since studying them will accomplish something enormous, much more so than studying law at Stanford would have.

That's less satisfying to an outsider, but no less valid than Dean's interests, I think.

It's pretty amazing how you took a wide assortment of off-hand fangirl comments -- Sam's lack of a room, how would Dean decorate it, what do we really know about Sam's likes/dislikes, Dean's a nester! -- and turned it into a really lovely, intuitive slice of Batcave life.

Dean? IN A TUX? Okay, that's nothing short of delicious. And you hit on how task-driven Dean is.

But more movingly (to me, anyways) is the fact Sam doesn't even know himself sometimes. I don't know what I like, either, Sam thinks. And how he has to sidle apologies up to Dean, sneakily, or the guy won't accept them. I've noted throughout the course of Show that Dean almost never apologizes. There are a gazillion different meta-theories for this, I'm sure.

Anywho, brilliant as usual, Carol! "The Lincoln Bedroom", ha!

Dean was so tickled by Bela ogling him in the "Red Sky" tux, and by the new suit Ezra put him in, that I thought it would be great fun to have him discover an old tux and use it to make an "event" out of unveiling Sam's room. I just love having Dean play!

It was a real puzzle, trying to figure out what Sam likes! Most of the things we've seen him enjoying, he's done in conjunction with Dean. That leaves just his music, and his food choices. Oh, and the dogs - but it's not time for a dog in the Batcave, yet.

Glad you liked the fic - I bribed the Muse with chocolate, and she caved to all the requests. :)

My muse needs some serious bribery today, to be frank! Time to break out the Girlscout cookies...

You got your Girl Scout cookies already???

Hmmm. Now the Muse sees Dean showing up at the Great Bend Walmart to discover a troop of Scouts out front. With boxes and boxes and boxes of COOOOOOOKIIIIIIES.

Awww....lucky Sam, to have a big brother like Dean who shows his love in such tangible ways - even measuring all the beds the find the longest one for Sammy! And love that he dressed up in a tux to spiffy up the occasion of introducing Sam to his new bedroom! lol

I thought about sending Dean back to the mattress store, but for a longer mattress he'd need a longer bed frame, and there's a limit to what he can transport in/on top of the car. Then I thought, well, maybe there's a bigger bed already there!

And I couldn't resist the idea of dressing Dean up in a vintage tux! I'm shallow, I know. *g*

Glad you enjoyed it!

Just beautiful!!!! Wow! I think that's it, what does Sam like? And I think Dean gave it a nice personal feel...especially that painting of the two boys. Sweet!

Thank you! I had the worst time coming up with a solution to that question ("What does Sam like?") - until I realized that the lack of an answer *was* the answer!

I want to add that I loved your attention to detail about Dean rewiring the electrical outlets to three prong. truly they would not have been built that way in the 1920's (when I think the place was built) and even by 1958 I don't think anything had the three prong. Very good detail (and a way to show Dean's smarts).

Thanks! My brother is an electrician, and my dad has done a lot of electrical work, so I've heard all the ins and outs of home wiring over the years. I imagine Dean had some practice growing up, helping John do minor repairs in the run-down apartments and houses they lived in.
