SPN FIC - It Was a Very Good Year

Jul 14, 2008 14:23

Let's take a look back -- John and Bobby and the boys, a long-ago summer.  With lyrics liberally borrowed from Don McLean's "American Pie."  (As a side note, this came about because of that music meme that's going around.  I graduated high school in 1972, and so did John and Mary. Where Dick Nixon came from, I couldn't tell ya.)

The boys had been ( Read more... )

Tell Bobby, Miss Kitty was Gunsmoke, not Bonanza. Maybe he meant he had nice dreams about Hoss. *snicker*

Nice look down memory lane for the big boys. Very nostalgic, and a tad melancholy. The beginnings of a great friendship between the Singers and Winchesters.

Eeeeeeek!!! My dad would never let me hear the end of that. 'Tis fixed. (Thank you.)

I *tried* to do Happy!John, but ya know...the stubborn bastard just won't be happy. *sighs*

Awww, kimmer beat me to the Bonanza nit-pik.

:)

But we forgive easy in the face of Wee!chester giggling, and an introspective John.

"But it's your soda."
Awesome.

Great nostalgic atmosphere on this one - and I loved John's reaction to Bobby offering to have the boys stay for a while.

Thanks! Makes me wonder how things would have turned out if John had accepted Bobby's friendship a little bit more - accepted him as an ally in the search for the YED. But that's our John, gonna do it *his* way...

"Don't lose sight of what you've got, John," Bobby said. "House don't mean much, sometimes."

Oh, God, there's all this John-angst, and then in the middle the sucker-punch of realising that Bobby lost his wife, too, and she didn't leave him with sons, "good boys". So very glad that Bobby became uncle/second father to Sam and Dean and grandfather to their children!

Poor Bobby, what he must have gone through - not only losing his wife (and I have a mental picture of them being a very devoted couple who had a lot of fun together), but being the one guilty of killing her. He had to have buried that pain really deep. So he definitely deserves some kids!

1973, I remember clearly; 1972 -- only the snow/ice storm that left our base frozen over.

Thanks for the story. I desperately needed a slightly angsty distraction and this fit the bill.

I remember '73 pretty well - my freshman year in college. But '72 was high school graduation, and actually *going* to college. A lot going on in my little small-town life!

Glad I could provide a distraction! It was a distraction for me too, since I had almost nothing "real" going on this morning.

I'm five years behind you on the graduation ("first in century three!") and still trying to think what I was doing in '72 besides being a Girl Scout (my dad was the Troop Leader -- none of the mothers on the base would take over -- and he "recruited" his WM to be our "assistant leader". The only troop to terrorize Boy Scouts...)

Nothing real?? I'd be stoked about a 5-day mini-vacay, even if I did have to shlep a parent to the doctor.

Vacay doesn't start till Wednesday. Stuck in the office today, with just about *zero* going on. So ficcing gives me something to do with my brain.
