Those damned bells. The sound seemed to grow louder, then softer, like a badly tuned radio.
The rain was coming down in a slow drizzle, though sun was predicted for tomorrow. A new sun, rising on a new world, Light thought, and smiled.
But the bells…
He cracked his neck and wandered over to the refrigerator, opening it and looking without interest at the food inside. All he had to do was wait. Everything was in place, perfectly planned. He couldn’t foresee a single problem. Mikami would do as he was told. Near would be there, thinking that he had a victory before him. Overconfidence would be his downfall and Kira’s exaltation, just the way it was meant to be.
So why did he keep thinking of L, six years dead and buried? Why was there a niggling doubt in the back of his mind? Something…wrong.
The bells echoed and faded. “Everything’s ready,” Light said, “I’ve planned for every contingency and Near has walked right into my trap. One more day, that’s all.”
The loudness of his voice sounded almost defiant, like a frightened child whistling in the dark. Light reached out and turned on the radio, drowning out the distant sound of bells.
