This is all kinds of brill. I love the atmosphere of this, quasi-hopeful, so much angst simmering under the surface.

And, no, Sam hasn't meaningful connections with other people in a long while, and given his track record, I can't blame him. Still doesn't stop the heart from aching for him, though.

Lovely fic. You may call it different, but it has all the hallmarks of your writing--beautiful, evocative and insightful. Not to mention the stop-start dialogue (which I love).

alkjsdf thank you so much. Writing this was...weird, it all came out in one big rush which hasn't happened in a while, everything I've been writing has been wrestling me to the ground lately, augh.

But yes - I saw this prompt and have seen people talking about Sam's isolation and it called to me, it called I say.

You always say the sweetest things. /blushing all over the place Thank you so much.

OMG, you wrote me fic! And you wrote me HAPPY fic! To me, in current canon, Dean's the one who's being more damaged by hunting, who desperately needs to retire to heal. The tragic thing about Sam isn't that the life he leads is destroying him, it's that at this point I don't think it really makes that much difference to him. He does hunting because it's what there. If he got set down in a different life he'd do it because it was there, it wouldn't really reach him or fix him the way it would Dean, in time, because he doesn't have any concept of connecting to life any more. It's one of my favorite motifs, Sam getting out of that isolation, and I do think maybe Dean could jolt him out of it, because Dean's maybe the only person Sam thinks he's real to, affects and is affected by.

So thank you for fixing Sam!

I don't even know who I am anymore.

XD In all seriousness, though, this was really fun to do! Your prompt attracted me for so many different reasons, some of them the very ones you list here. And yeah, Sam is just...augh, Sam. I don't think even he knows, really, what would make things better. Or thinks that anything would. But I like to think that maybe Dean could jolt him out of it, because hey, apparently even I need a happy ending sometimes.

Thank you so much! It is always a delight to write for your prompts.

Terrific!
I think this is my new favorite curtain!fic because it's so them. They are both still a mess and still trying to save each other, neither one giving up. Well Done!

I want to start a petition to have the series end like this!!!

Not happy-ever-after...but hopeful and still them as brothers.

I love this, thank you for writing it!

Heee. God, we can only hope. >> Oh sigh. That's about the best we can do at this point, isn't it?

Thank you so much!
