PROLOGUE
There was a policy about inter-office dating in the Preventers Organization. It was severely frowned upon among the staff, but it was point blank Not Allowed between Agents…to say nothing of between partners. And now Heero Yuy could see why.
He’d come to about five minutes ago, but had feigned continued unconsciousness for three of those minutes. What little he’d gleaned of his situation was not encouraging. He was bound, tightly, hand, foot, and body, to something that felt rather like a dentist’s chair. The wet and sticky feeling against his cheek suggested a head wound that hadn’t yet clotted, which was definitely bad as those things bled like a motherfucker. And his left knee felt suspiciously…wrong.
But all of this became of little concern when he heard Duo’s voice, hoarse and wavering, and…gurgling with fluid in his lungs...
A gunshot sounded.
Heero’s eyes snapped open and he surged against his bonds, all thought of pretense and strategy flying out of his mind.
“Duo!” he called out, trying to tear himself free. “Duo, look at me!”
There was soft, gentle laughter coming from his right, and Heero whipped around to look at its source. The rather dapper gentleman in a designer wool suit was holding a handgun in one hand and a white handkerchief in the other. The gun was still trained on Duo, but the cold grey eyes were staring straight at Heero.
“Ah, Little Preventer Yuy is awake now?”
Heero’s eyes widened. On these kinds of missions the Agents carried no identifying documents or markers.
“As you can see, Agent Yuy, I have your partner here and you are both at my mercy. I took the liberty of removing your communications devices and tossing them in the building I just disposed of.”
The man gestured for Heero to look left where a large picture window showed a warehouse three blocks away completely engulfed in flames.
“No one is coming for you.” The man stepped closer to him, head cocked to one side as he searched his face. “How does that make you feel?”
Heero snarled and tried to surge forward again, teeth gnashing in frustration and anger.
“Now, now, Agent Yuy,” said the man, waving the handkerchief at him like one would playfully admonish a kitten for peeing on the rug. “Play nicely, or your partner dies.”
Instantly, Heero stilled.
Duo was still alive then. That gunshot… Heero looked Duo over, though trying to bury his increasing worry and panic beneath the surface of the Soldier he once was. If he let that man know what Duo meant to him… It would be the ultimate leverage and Heero could not let that happen. The two of them, ex-Gundam Pilots turned Preventer Agents, had hidden the true nature of their relationship for more than a year now. They hadn’t wanted to work with anyone else in the field and they hadn’t wanted to be relegated to desk work or worse. Everyone knew that they were good friends and great partners, but no one knew about the kisses traded in the dark of night, and the whispered promises of forever.
Forever and a day, Duo had once said.
Heero could feel himself becoming irrational and he tried to quash it. There was a beast inside him that raged and burned white hot where Duo was concerned. The beast knew no logic, knew no reason, and there was no telling what it might do, what it might say if unleashed. If Heero let it show… If that man knew that Duo was his weakness…
Because if anything happened to Duo, Heero knew, absolutely, that he wouldn’t be able to control the beast and they would all be lost. For the beast would have no qualms about taking the Preventers Organization, the Earth Sphere, anything and everything down with it into its pit of despair.
No. Duo had to be okay.
Then Heero would be able to focus on getting them out of there. He had to save them. He *would* save them. They were going to go home. Now.
It had been a leg shot.
Duo was caked in dirt and blood, both dried and fresh, and it had taken Heero a moment to find out where the new wound was.
But there it was and it was just a leg shot. High, and in the meat of the thigh, but it would be okay. Heero breathed a sigh of relief. He had dragged Duo back to safety from more serious injuries than this. Hell, Duo had walked away from more serious injuries himself, on his own two feet.
“Heero.” Duo’s voice was a thready, worrisome. “Heero, whatever happens, don’t tell him anything.”
The man was next to Duo in a flash. Heero was amazed by his speed of movement.
“SHUT UP!” He slammed the butt of his gun into the side of Duo’s head. “You either tell me what I want to know or you *don’t speak*!”
Blood was flowing freely down Duo’s face, and he was blinking furiously, trying to clear it from his eyes. He was trying to focus on Heero, trying to meet his gaze.
“Stop it!” Heero yelled, again, pulling at his bonds. He couldn’t say for certain who he was yelling at: the man for beating on Duo, or Duo for making that tragic face at him.
“Agent Yuy, do you have something you’d like to tell me, then?”
Heero couldn’t take his eyes off Duo. His lips were moving but Heero couldn’t hear him. There was something in that expression that was breaking his heart. He couldn’t breathe.
“Agent Yuy!” The man’s voice was sharp now, no longer thick with affected charm. “You will look at me when I address you!”
But Heero’s gaze remained locked on Duo.
“Agent Yuy!” The man brought his gun down on Duo’s head again, the harsh crack of steel meeting skull jerking Heero’s attention back up to their captor. “If you insist on ignoring me, I will have to remove this little distraction here.”
The gun was cocked; the muzzle pressed to Duo’s temple.
“I’ll kill you, I swear to God!” Heero screamed, pulling forward, fighting his restraints.
And then the man smiled.
“Really?”
Blood bubbled from Duo’s lips as he gasped for air. Still he fought to smile for Heero, soft and gentle, forgiving.
“Are you going to tell me where it is, Agent Yuy, or am I going to have to make an example of your *lover* here?”
It was the merest whisper, Duo’s swollen lips barely able to form the shapes of the words, his fluid-filled lungs barely able to give him the air to speak them.
“ARE YOU LISTENING TO ME?”
But Heero could only hear one voice now.
The gun shot rang out loud and clear.
Heero was both surprised and yet completely numb. He found that he couldn’t react. Everything became so still and grey except for Duo’s blue, blue eyes and red, red blood, both so bright, too bright. Duo held his gaze until the very end when he too went still.
Then everything went white.
