Review - The Avengers EMH Episode 14, "Masters of Evil"

Oct 19, 2011 12:39

Aha! Episode with a cool name and, I presume, the villain team-up that's been set up over the last few episodes. Gonna be good! (At least I hope so.)

Ooh! This episode’s look at the EMH-verse paper “Excelsior” shows us headlines like “secret school for Mutants?”, “Replaced...aliens”, and “Baxter tenant speaks!”
~
I particularly love that last one, given all the trouble the FF had with their tenants in WGH. :P. Also, if Avengers: EMH really is also part of the “Wolverine and the X-Men” verse, like the Marvel Wikia says it is (and apparently that was mentioned (as a possibility?) by Josh Fine at one point), then I wonder what the implications for mutants (remember David Cannon/Whirlwind was one) are in this cartoon. Isn’t the Institute mysteriously destroyed in the "Wolverine and the-X-Men"-'verse (from what I recall of the one episode I saw a long time ago)? Hmm. It'll definitely be one of the Marvel cartoons I’ll be watching soon after this rewatch of Avengers EMH is done! :D (more on that later).

At first I thought I was seeing part of the earlier episode with Whirlwind again.

Jan (to Whirlwind): "...but man you are not so smart. First you get beat up by me, go to jail, break out...and then you come back here? Everybody knows this is where I shop!"
~
Jan, sweetheart, that might be part of the problem, no? If they know where you shop, they know where to find you. But I like the rest of the line(s), though.

I'm surprised there's no reaction from her on seeing Simon again. Surely she - like the rest of the Avengers! - thought he was dead?

Fly up and out of there, Jan! Fly up and out! (Or at least go full-size) I keep wanting to tell her. But no, she doesn't.

Zemo, if Cap doesn't make you pay for picking Jan up by the wing like that, Hank will. And you don't want to be on the back end of a beatdown by either of those two!

Clint and Bruce are back on the title screen! :D

I love Clint just randomly ranting to T'Challa like he's the only reasonable guy on the team.

As far as leading the Avengers goes, according to Clint, Tony's not qualified, Thor is "crazy", Bruce is a "timebomb waiting to go off", Hank “couldn’t care less”, and Jan "belongs on the party circuit, not in law enforcement".

I'm not sure how valid that assessment is:
- Tony has his tech and science (engineering) know-how, and he must have done some team-building work while running Stark Enterprises (surely?)...so leading the Avengers could be a follow-on from that. In addition, he’s shown enough interest in the idea to provide the Avengers a base, communications system, and transport - and appears to have the funds to keep them well provided-for. In addition, as a leader of the team he’d also have Steve’s military and leadership experience as well as Hank's (what should be occasional) dissenting voice and additional scientific expertise to help him.
- Hulk showed last episode that he AND Bruce can be worthwhile allies. Hulk can be reasonable if not constantly dealt with like he’s always a threat and can be loyal - and Bruce’s a scientist smart enough to have developed a secret base on the run, for goodness’ sake. He just needs to be “let out” at the right time.
- Thor's not crazy, just different, but I'm not sure how his leadership style would work for a group of human supers.
- Hank I’m not sure about. I'm fairly certain he'd like to continue his studies of vibranium and entomology (myrmecology = ants), but given the fact that there are supervillains out on the loose there and that SHIELD has given the Avengers the (unofficial) OK, I don't see why Hank wouldn't be at least willing to help hunt bad guys - unless the SHIELD approval is what has him worried (but that's such a tiny tiny point, and I don’t think Clint knows Hank well enough yet to know about it).
- And the assessment of Jan is just wrong, pure and simple. She's about the most dedicated villain-catcher among them, apart from maybe Steve (whom, as T'Challa points out, Clint forgot).

Nice embassy you've got there, T'Challa. :)

Also, a little background on Black Panther: the juice of the Heart-Shaped Herb, when used on the skin, enhances the senses of the kings of the Panther tribe. It’s a deadly poison used on anyone else.

Tony’s talking to Jarvis while working on one of his suits! XD He currently has three sets and he wants them all in red.

Tony (to Jarvis): "Jan would want more suits. Maybe you'll do what *she* says."
~
XD

Hmm. Jarvis is smart enough to distinguish between "Avenger ID Wasp" and "Janet van Dyne." Interesting.

Ah, the villain I didn't recognize from the scenes with Jan is called "Dynamo". Checking one of my earlier reviews (the name sounded vaguely familiar), I see that he was once a high-profile Vault prisoner. Probably an Iron Man villain, since he was so eager to crush poor Tony.

Ouch, what a takedown. But notice that despite not being suited up, Tony didn’t give up easily!

KIRBY KIBBLE! :D "Now with Kirby dots, and real beans dogs love."

Hulk's not keen on commercials...or Enchantress.

Nice use of him as a ball, though. Hold, then throw! Straight through one of Amora’s portals to the Frost Giants.

Steve, you would be training. XD

I wonder what the Executioner did to him though! D: But notice it took Executioner *and* Simon to take him down.

Zemo: "I told you when we last met this wasn’t over, Captain." *significant pause* "Now it is."
~
Let’s see, Zemo!

Oooh. "Avengers, Assemble!" is creepy when said by Zemo...and he uses Jan’s ID card to issue it! D:
I wonder if he's going to use Jan to get to Hank! Or maybe both Hank and Thor, seeing as Jan's friendly - and has worked with! - both. D:

JANE! :D How nice to see you again.

Jane: "So...is your dad still taking his big nap? What did you call it again?"
Thor: "The Odinsleep. No, he is woken by now."
Jane: "And you haven’t talked to him yet."
Thor: "Nay, Jane Foster. I have not returned to Asgard since we last spoke. I have been needed here."
~
*pause*
~
Thor: "The Avengers are formidable, but the threats they face...it would seem I am needed more than ever."
~
Hmm. So where were you during "Panther’s Quest", hmm? Interesting. And your talk about the Avengers would be a bit more believable, sweetie, if not for the sad look you wore when you saw the couple kissing in the park...while you were out walking with a woman you’re interested in. :D.

Thor: "This card is troubling. Iron Man's technology is constantly making noises at me."
~
XD

Love that strain of music that happens when Thor takes off and Jane looks at him going, wistfully. Sort of reminded me of a strain from the famous Superman theme.

I love that the mansion has a skylight for Thor - or any other fliers, presumably - to come in from. And it leads to a central space!

Thor: "Ho, Avengers! Ho, Computer! Thor has arrived!"
~
XD

Thor recognizes Zemo! Nice.

This time it took everyone - well except Zemo, but he chose to just stand there - to take an Avenger out.

So, wait...what about Hank? Clint and T'Challa see Thor taken down, and maybe realize what's happened to the others, but still - I hope he hasn't been taken down off-panel. That would suck.

Y’know what else is unsettling? Zemo with Cap’s shield. :|

Ah, Simon's here - called "my Wonder Man" by Zemo - because the Masters of Evil promised him his humanity back. :(.

So, the Masters have Jan, Steve, Tony, Thor, and the Hulk, with only the first three kept captive in the mansion. Interesting. I wonder if Hank's still in Wakanda.

Cap: "What do you want? The war is over. Is revenge on me really all that important to you?"
Zemo: "Yes. But now, Captain, I have been promised the world - and you will live just long enough to see me have it."
~
Oooh.

Zemo’s got an expressive mask, too. :)

Oy. Between Dynamo and Simon, one of them should have stayed to keep watch on the door. *shakes head*

Ah, wait. Thor's there at the Mansion too - he's just secured differently and away from the others.

Enchantress has always thought of Thor as her "heart's desire". Gee, I wonder what Jane (or Sif?) would have to say to that!

Enchantress is also willing to discard Zemo et al when she tires of them. :) An interesting development since, I believe, it was her that went to him (and Zola).

Abomination: "The Avengers are done - and so is this mission!"
Zemo: "The Hulk is still alive - but the bigger threat is Ant...Man."
~
I don't know whether to be happy or worried. It's 'Look, Ant-Man's being taken seriously! :D' vs. 'Oh-oh, Hank's really in for it. D:'.

Abomination (laughs): "Ant-Man! If you're worried about Ant-Man, then we really are better off withou..."
~
Oh. So much for being taken seriously. :S

Zemo: "Ant-Man is the last Avenger. He's a threat. And you wish to know why I lead? Because I am better than you."
Abomination: "Ant-Man's not the last Avenger - there's two more."
~
He promptly gets shot with one of Clint's arrows. But hah, Zemo, so much for being "better" than anyone - look what happens when you work with information that’s not up to date! (Even though it *is* good not to underestimate *any* Avenger :))

Clint (with a grin, to Amora (who disapparated to dodge an arrow)): "Okay. That was a good move."
Amora: "You are worm food, Mortal!"
~
:)

Abomination (to Clint): "I owe you some payback, Robin Hood."
Clint (as he’s being squeezed): "Please...I’m begging you...brush your teeth!"
~
XD

Tony (recovering just to see Clint and T’Challa overpowered): "Hawkeye, are you crazy? You should have brought in SHIELD!"
Clint (looking at T’Challa): "See??"

Zemo: "The SHIELD agent and the Wakandan king. You should have walked away from the Avengers before it came to this. Now, you must be punished. "
T'Challa: "I *am* an Avenger. And I will meet my end with pride."
Clint: "I'm gonna meet mine with kicking and screaming."
~
XD

Zemo: "... Did you really believe that two of you could defeat all of us?"
Clint: "Weird. Purple puss here seems to think we were trying to defeat him."
T'Challa: "I heard. He is misguided." *Looks at Zemo* "We were not trying to defeat your team, Baron. We were simply allowing Ant-Man uninterrupted access to his lab."
Clint: "Yeah. We just picked him up from the Wakandan embassy while you tools were starting your little seige here. He just needed to get a few things."

I love Clint's casual attitude here. His facial expressions and finger gestures (the "ant size" he makes! :D) are brilliant too! Also, clever flashback work. Remember how disappointed I was that Hank wasn't in the earlier scene with Clint and T'Challa? We're now shown - and on re-watching, I realize that it was kinda there all along - that T'Challa looked down at his shoulder before saying "Indeed, it is up to us". XD That's brilliant! It was Hank there, Ant-sized, talking to him and offering a suggestion.

HANK! :D
~
Hank (standing in the doorway): "Surrender, Zemo! End this before anyone gets hurt. "
~
I love a heroic Ant-Man. I love a heroic Hank! This is great. ♥

Interesting how Steve, Tony, and Jan woke up (or were woken up, in Steve's case) just in time to see and react to something sort of..."related" to them. Steve first, because Zemo was gloating; Tony when Clint and T'Challa crashed the party, because he feels they need more firepower; and Jan just when Hank's making his big entrance.

Jan (worried, scared): "Hank? Are you crazy? - Run!"
~
Echoing Hank's "get out of here, Jan" from "Breakout"? I wonder.

But notice that in both situations, neither did as the other "suggested" because it wasn't really an option. Hank and Jan are heroes - they'll both stay till the fight's won. :P

I'm a bit surprised at his method for dealing with Simon, though (dissipating him somehow?), given what happened in Simon's episode. I hope he's got some sort of solution later!

Abomination: "Come on, bug." Then - :O
Hank: *kicks him out, literally*
♥ ♥ ♥

With Amora down, her magic dissipates. Jan, Steve, Tony, and Thor are free.

Amora: "Thor! You would...not...harm me, would you?"
Thor: "Nay."
~
*opens portal to reveal a freezing Hulk*
~
Thor: "But my friend might."

Amora, you don't really need the Executioner...do you? You're a magical being yourself! :S You should be able to fight off brute strength, at least to start with.

Steve: "I'd like my shield back now. It needs to be cleaned." :)

Ah, Simon's back. Good.

Hank: "Simon! I'm glad to see you up and about but...what are you *doing* with these people? You're a good man - you don't want any part of this!"
Simon: "I don't have any choice! They're the only reason I'm even alive - and if I want to stay alive, I *do as they say*!"
~
Hey, look, talking! Being productive again! Now Hank knows what's wrong (hopefully?) - and he can work on an alternative solution to present to Simon, so that he can (hopefully!) quit the Masters.

Tony: "All right, team. I want this scum out of my house right now!"
*Avengers attack*
~
Zemo: "Destroy - them - aaaaaalllll!"
*Masters attack*
~
XD

Ooh, nice clash there! A shout-out to the last few scenes of the opening of the 90s animated X-Men series, maybe? :D

Jan (to Dynamo): "This is gonna hurt...and I won't lie to you - I'm kinda glad!"
~
*zap*
~
Nice in-cartoon continuity. The glass on Dynamo's...protective head covering? Cracked when he fell over earlier. Also? Great use of getting-smaller abilities. :)

Clint, you are badass here. :D Stabbing someone with an arrow when your bow's out of reach? Good quick thinking.

Clint: "Y'know, I'm not so sure I want to be part of a team I have to rescue every week."
~
XD Way to be meta there, Clint.

Steve knows there's more to that villain team-up than what meets the eye.

Zemo: "I *told* you not to underestimate them!"
Abomination: "And you failed to account for Panther and Hawkeye!"
~
*They’ve drawn weapons when Amora speaks*
~
Amora: "Enough. It doesn't matter - none of it does. For it is all a game, and you have played your parts."

Ooooh. She's got an agenda bigger than any of them!

And I wonder what Abomination’s background is - he’s got an accent of some sort that I can’t quite place. Notice the way he says "Hawkeye".

Amora: "The pieces are in place, my lord."
~
I wonder who that is. Loki? Or someone greater? Dun-dun-dun! :D

And I wonder what role Baron Strucker and HYDRA will have in all this.

Roundup:
It *is* good. Interesting to get the mixed villains fighting the mixed Avengers properly. There are some great character moments here - Hank! Clint! T'Challa! Amora! - and I like that. It was also great to see Jane again. She's been great in all her other appearances. She should meet Maria or Jan...or both! Now that would be interesting.

Storywise, there's intriguing setup for the future - always good if followed up on. And also - team dynamics! Good team dynamics for the win.

Random infobite:
A bit of tv.com research shows that Colleen O'Shaughnessey - Jan's voice - isn't familiar to me from somewhere else, although I thought she was. But Kari Wahlgren, Amora and Jane's voice(s)? Is Charmcaster from Ben 10! *ding*. That's why she sounded familiar, especially her Amora voice. Interesting.
