This was great =) And even if you migh have felt awkward writing the smutty part, it sure didn't show in the fic'. The writing was great through and through. Nothing awkward there except the situation they were in XD Yay for passive-agressive hate sex! And I really liked the end where, despite everything, Gilbert walks away with a small victory of his own and his pride at least somewhat intact. Psssh Ivan, obviously if you care you lose! I thought that bit of sentimentality to Ivan was really in-character. I've always thought of him as having these layers. That beneath the pleasant smile there's the crazy creepy side, and even further beneath that there's someone who's just really horribly lonely. And beneath that... well I dunno, but you get my point. Hmm... some of my favourite parts also: Ivan saying "Nothing crushes Russia. No one takes Russia, no matter how hard they try. Not Bonaparte or your Hitler or the United States with their bag of tricks. Moscow can not be touched." Gilbert calling Ivan a "stupid slav" Well, I pretty much loved everything that came out of their mouths, so if I continued this it'd just be a bunch of quotes, haha. I liked the way Gilbert's anger and irritation wasn't about being occupied --how that was like a normal part of a nations life that, sometime in your existence, you might find yourself under somebody elses rule-- and instead about being constantly reminded of his weakness because of the occupation. Just sounded very... Gilbert to me. I also really liked the image of Ivan leaning his forehead on Gilbert's.
Tl;dr - This was really well written, and I enjoyed reading it =) Thank you for writing and posting this.
*happy dance!* Reviews can never be TL;DR! I think the writing of smut is awkward because it requires not just being in a mood for writing but being in a mood for smut at the same time... It's hard to get those two to line up! But I do try to make such scenes as not-awkward sounding as possible, by leaving out stuff that people are likely to get hung up on, especially anything that makes you go "WAT?" no unsightly descriptions of organs etc. I like to stick with peripheral descriptions of stuff that gives you a pretty good idea of what's going on without actually saying it; like the spoon, I was very pleased with the spoon in this... I do picture Russia as being pretty possessive, so I interpretted that with Ivan as awkward, unhealthy affection for the other Soviets and occupied areas. I'm not going to continue this particular fic, this one is a one-shot, but I do have intentions of writing more within my little uncracked-Hetalia universe... I tend to be more bias towards the Celtic areas though, family history and all. Also because there is just so much chemistry between those countries that are represented in the Hetalia canon (although I do have to think Francis is a bit *too* over-the-top and the anthropologist in me goes "no! cultural misconsceptions! eye-contact period! confusion!") and the horribly disfunctional little family they are... So I'm more likely to write stuff with thems. I'm particularly charmed by the way that US culture is rather dismissive of English culture explicitly, but in practice really uses England as the cultural authority and England is exactly the same about France classically. Kind of like the Greece to Rome dynamic of way back in the day... Anyway, that's rambling. I'm done for now.
Vague smut is the best smut! Well, not vague per se but vague about the actual mechanics of it all and focusing on all the other stuff going on instead. Especially descriptions of the...sounds certain body parts make is something I'd gladly just skip. A while ago I read a fic where the author at the end notes apologized about going too much into the characters' feelings and other things during the smut. Like it was a bad thing letting that take the spot light. Which had me going "What, are you kidding? that was gold." So yeah, I definitely don't mind when that stuff is glossed over. Well, ever since that comic strip with Russia, America and Lithuania where Russia goes "He is my ex after all," that's been my image of him too ^^ England is probably a bit on the possesive side too considering his imperialistic days. A friend is completely freaked out by France's characterisation. I don't mind him much, but I prefer when he's not written as a total creeper (even though he kind of is in canon. Whyyy Himaruya?) I get that about being biased by the way. I think where I come from has made me a bit partial towards the nordics. At least, I'm sure I wouldn't love Sweden half as much as I do if it wasn't because of it. Knowing more about the history then I do of the other countries probably played a part in it too (nations like Spain, Hungary and so on was just a big fuzzy 'what?' before APH)
What if the descriptions of the sounds are hilariously awesome? "Like someon stepped in a bucket of wet play-doh" or something... A bit of it, besides just not wanting to slow down the rythem with buzz-words is just the idea of leaving to the imagination. Everybody's got a different idea of sexy, so letting the reader fill in their own details leaves them happier with it in the end. I called the way I was righting it a "road-map" and then the reader makes up the details. I'm not sure England is so much possessive, not in a real active or agressive way, but sentimental yes. It's kind of gotten over the compulsion to take care of the little ones but it's pleased by having its little one... And the relationship with the US in particular is always a little weird because the US insists upon doing weird things. France doesn't bother me as much as Korea... I mean, France was a "Ah, yeah, that's a prevailing steriotype perpetuated by media and various tasit aspects of culture-clash..." but Korea really made me cringe... There's only one group that I ever see the Japanese being outright racist about and that's Koreans... I really doubt it's deliberate in Hetalia so much as engrained into the culture that the author's coming from, but it's still one of those things that makes me go "Eehhrgh..."
