happy birthday bertums

Nothing special. It's Bert's (nightehfaice) birthday today (today/yesterday) so I figured I should get him something. This is for you~ Just a drabble. Enjoy. ♥

Courtney Beckett has always been a curious little girl. She's loved taking pictures with her mother's aim-and-shoot camera ever since she figured out how to press the shutter button. She likes exploring, pretending, trying to figure out problems and situations so she can later turn them into her own little playful adventures.

Courtney's only 6. She's a smart girl for a six year old, but she still acts her age. She also has an older brother, William, who's 12. Courtney loves William to death. But ever since his twelfth birthday, he's been different. Courtney has longed to figure it out, to discover why he goes to bed later than normal, why he yells at their mother at the dinner table and why he seems to day dream so much. Their mother, Claire, simply told Courtney when she'd asked that William is growing up, that he's changing, and he's going to be trying to act like an adult.

Courtney doesn't believe it.

She pesters her brother about it a lot, but he always tells her to go away and that he has homework. Once, Courtney sat by her brother's door when he was on the phone to try and listen in to the conversation, but found out nothing of use.

It's one afternoon after school, when he's walking her home and she's bounding ahead of him towards the playground that she thinks she knows what's been going on. She drops her bag and tries to get up to the monkey bars of the playground, but as usual, she needs William's help to get her up. She cries out for him as she rests her hands on top of the platform and jumps from foot to foot.

A boy about William's age walks over to her slowly when he hears her yelling William's name. "I can help you," he offers with a big smile and a too-loud voice. Courtney instantly freezes up and shakes her head, quickly claiming that she's not allowed to talk to strangers.

"I'm not a stranger!" The boy suddenly yells, frowning and looking awfully hurt. Before the conversation can continue, William has run over and grabs onto the boy's hand.

"Courtney! What are you doing?" he snaps. Courtney's eyes follow down William's arm to where his and the boy's hands are linked tightly. "Bert isn't a stranger. He's my best friend. We've been best friends for forever."

Courtney frowns to herself as she tries to think back, to if she's ever seen this boy before. Her grip tightens on the edge of the platform when she realises the face is somewhat familiar; that she does remember William's twelfth birthday party. It was at this very park - they had balloons and party food and lots of William's class mates came. But there was a boy who wasn't invited, that none of them knew, that William took a liking to. He invited him closer and gave him cake and drinks, so he seemed to cling to William for the whole day.

Bert seems loud. He's messy with his short black hair that looks like it needs a cut because it's growing past his ears. Only girls have hair past their ears, Courtney thought. She wonders if William's sudden attitude change has anything to do with this boy, but before she can ponder it much further, both William and Bert have stepped closer so hoist her up onto the platform.

For a while she stands and holds onto the monkey bars without jumping up to them. She watches as William sits with Bert at the edge of the playground, their hands digging in the mulch and giggling to one another as they spread the dirt all over themselves. Courtney smiles at that, still watching her brother play with his new best friend. She thinks, he looks happy, even though he snaps at their mother and wants to grow his hair long. She thinks, maybe Bert was the best birthday present William has ever gotten.
