Title: Worth Fighting For
Dated from: 2009
Rating: PG
Pairing: Sawyer/Kate
Spoilers: I’m going to say up until 5.11 - but I wrote almost everything before watching the episode
Summary: It seems that all they do is fight these days. And she can’t help but wonder: is there something between them worth fighting for?

Author's Note: This was written as a bday gift for my dear friend Polly (ms-pollygreen). As she lives far away and we can’t really see each other, I’m doing my best to give her something I’m sure she’ll love: SKATE! So this fic doesn’t have the best of the plots - but it has Skate, with all their angst! As I always say, English is not my first language, so forgive me for any stupid mistakes.

To Polly: whoever says there’s no way to make real friends online, doesn’t know what it’s talking about. We’re proof of that and that distance doesn’t exist when the friendship is real. I wish I could tell you happy bday in person, but as I can’t, I hope you’ll enjoy a little Skate as a gift…

Happy Birthday, honey! Love ya!

Worth Fighting For

“What the hell do you want from me?” She yells, angry like he has never seen her before. “Why don’t you leave me alone?”

“You want ME to leave YOU alone?” He yells back, laughing bitterly. “Well, that’s freaking ironic, isn’t it?” He’s still yelling and can’t help but think that that’s all they’ve been doing for the past months.

“Oh, please, not again!” She rolls her eyes, anger written all over her face. “I ruined your perfect little blond life with Juliet, I get it. And I already told you I was sorry!” She’s still yelling and there’s tears falling down her face now, mixed with the rain neither of them had noticed.

“It’s not about that!” He’s a little hurt by her words, but of above it all, he’s frustrated “Jeez, Kate, let it go, damn it! It’s not like you went celibate for the last three years, so don’t throw it all on me! We both moved on!”

“How dare you? How can you compare this perfect bubble you’ve been living with my life out there? I’ve been in hell for the past three years, Sawyer, HELL! While you were, building the life you never wanted…” She looks around, sighing. “You certainly didn’t hesitate to move on…” She talks normally now, her voice colder than he remembers

“And being engaged to Jack was just what?” He answers in the same tone, but a little more warmer. “I’ve heard you, talking about Aaron, about living together, about being engaged and planning a wedding.” She looks away, biting her bottom lip. “And I’ve never judged you. Why can’t you do the same for me?”

They don’t touch. They don’t look at each other. They just stand there, close to the ocean, looking away.

“What is the point?” She asks after a while, her voice now touched with sadness. “What is the point of us, standing here having this stupid argument, when there’s nothing to fight about?” She’s still not looking at him, but he turns his face while hearing her voice

“What do you mean by that?” He waits, and she doesn’t answer. So he takes a step in her direction and touches her arm, so she’ll look at him. “What do you mean by that, Kate?”

“I meant exactly what I said. There’s nothing to fight about!” She sighs, looking away again. “I don’t know if there ever was something…”

“Don’t say that! How can you say that?” Now he’s the one to get angry first and she’s actually surprised by his reaction.

“What? What am I saying that sounds so wrong to you? Hadn’t you just said that we both moved on? So, there’s no reason to fight, ‘cause there is no FREAKING reason to care that much!” And there she is, yelling at him again, in the rain. “See, Sawyer, that’s it. That’s all we have. Fights over some confusing feelings we shared years ago. So, please, feel free to stop pretending you care and, you know, MOVE ON!”

He looks at her, angry and clearly frustrated by her words.

She stands still, her head high, her eyes defying him to prove her wrong.

And he does exactly that: he takes another step in her direction and reaches to touch her. His hands are soon around her waist and before she can even think about it, he pulls her closer. And he kisses her.

At first, the kiss is angry, rough, painful, but these feelings don’t last. She surrenders very quickly, opening up her mouth to kiss him back. That’s the moment when it all changes and the kiss becomes soft, warm and with the passion they both looked for in the past three years, but were never able to find.

They’re not fools and they know that the thing between them, whatever it is, isn’t solved by a couple of heated kisses. And they don’t actually care.

At least now they know: whatever it is, it’s definitely worth fighting for…

THE END
