Lucy quietly opened the door of her bedroom and peered out, making sure the coast was clear. She crept down the hallway and quietly opened the door to Molly's room, sneaking in as quickly as possible.

"Molly?" Lucy whispered.

"I'm awake." Molly lifted the covers and patted the bed beside her. Lucy climbed in, cuddling up against her sister.

"I can't believe you leave for Hogwarts in a week."

"I know. Me neither."

"I know I won't get to go for two years, but I want us to be in the same house. Is there a way to make sure?"

"I don't know. Our family has never been very talkative about what a Sorting actually involves."

"Maybe if we asked everyone individually rather than at Weasley Family Dinner they might tell us."

"That's a good idea! We can ask Mum and Daddy at breakfast about their Sortings and get permission to Floo everybody else."

Having decided on a plan, Lucy and Molly finally fell asleep.

The next morning, they found only their dad at breakfast.

"Good morning, girls. Your mum had an early meeting today."

"We wanted to ask both of you something," Molly started. "What was your Sorting like?"

"Molly and I want to make sure we're in the same house, so we are trying to figure out how."

"Your mum was, what they call, hatstalled. Her Sorting took more than five minutes because the Hat couldn't decide what to do with her. It said she was smart enough for Ravenclaw, bold enough for Gryffindor, loyal as a Hufflepuff, and ambitious as a Slytherin. Your mum told me the Hat kept dithering and she told it to shut up and put her in Hufflepuff, which was Nanny's house."

"That would be horrible to sit up there in front of everybody for more than five minutes!"

"Don't worry, Sweetie. Your mum was the only person who had been hatstalled in fifty years. It's quick for most people."

"What about your Sorting, Daddy?" Lucy asked.

"Well, the Hat wanted to put me in Slytherin, and I begged it to put me in Gryffindor."

"Why didn't you want to be in Slytherin?"

"I didn't want my parents to be mad at me."

"Grandma and Grandpa wouldn't have been mad at you for what house you were in, would they?"

"Of course not! They would have loved me no matter what. Unfortunately, I wasn't smart enough when I was eleven to understand that."

Molly and Lucy nodded seriously. "So we can tell the Hat where we want to be?"

"Your mother and I did."

"Can we Floo call our aunts and uncles and ask them, too?"

"I don't see why not. Finish your breakfast and call away."

"Uncle Harry goes to work earlier than everybody else so why don't we try him first?"

Lucy nodded and threw the Floo powder into the fire, stating “Grimmauld Place” and both girls’ heads began traveling.

Uncle Harry and Aunt Ginny were at the table with their children in the kitchen when the girls’ heads arrived in the Floo.

“Good morning, Molly and Lucy! How can we help you?” Uncle Harry knelt on the heath in front of the fire. Aunt Ginny was feeding baby Lily.

“We wanted to know about your Sorting? Did the Hat let you pick your house?” Molly asked.

“The Hat wanted to put me in Slytherin, and I thought ‘not Slytherin’ as hard as I could, and the Hat said, ‘not Slytherin, eh? Well, better be Gryffindor!’ The last word was heard by everybody.”

“Daddy said the Hat wanted to put him in Slytherin too!” Lucy exclaimed. “How about you, Aunt Ginny?”

Aunt Ginny called from the table, “My entire family was in Gryffindor, so I put the Hat on my head thinking, ‘I have to be in Gryffindor’ over and over again. The Hat tried to convince me that as the only girl I should have my own house and suggested Slytherin, but I kept telling it I had to be in Gryffindor and it listened.”

Molly and Lucy called out their thanks and pulled their heads out of the Floo. They called the rest of their aunts and uncles to hear their stories.

Uncle Bill, Uncle Charlie, Aunt Angelina, and Uncle Ron all told them that the Hat barely touched their heads and yelled out, “Gryffindor!”

Uncle George said he and Uncle Fred had planned to ask for a different house than their family, but when it touched Fred’s head, the Hat yelled, “Gryffindor!” before there was time for Fred to think of anything else. Uncle George said he then went to the Hat thinking Gryffindor as hard as he could and was also placed in Gryffindor.

Aunt Hermione said she could see the benefits of each house and didn’t ask for anything. The Hat debated between Ravenclaw and Gryffindor, and put her in Gryffindor.

After finishing the last call, Molly turned to Lucy and said, “It seems we get to pick if we want.”

“Except for Uncle Fred!”

“Except he didn’t want to pick a house because it would be better for him but solely for the purpose of being different. And the Hat didn’t even give him a chance to say that, since it picked Gryffindor immediately like for several others.”
“So what house should we pick?” Lucy looked at Molly expectantly.

Molly considered. “Well, we’re both girls, so we share being girls with Mummy. Maybe we should pick Gryffindor and then we’d have our house in common with Daddy.”

“Sounds good!”

Molly was the second to last in line to be Sorted. Only Victoire would be Sorted after she was, but at least she wasn’t last. Victoire seemed to think being last was special, so that was good for her. Molly wouldn’t have agreed. She had to wait for almost every other first year. She couldn’t even pay attention to her classmates’ names or who went to what house because all she could think over and over was GryffindorGryffindorGryffindor. When it was finally her turn, the Hat barely touched her head and called out, “Gryffindor!” Molly breathed a huge sigh of relief.

She breathed another sigh of relief as Victoire was Sorted into Ravenclaw.
