First, she had wanted white.

“It’s neutral,” she said. “It won’t matter whether it’s a boy or girl if we paint the room white.”

So they had gone to the store, bought all the (expensive) white paint needed to paint the (fairly large sized) room, and had spent the next weekend turning that spare room into a baby’s nursery.

Until she had decided that she wanted cream instead.

“White is just … a little too bright. It’s too much like a hospital, or a school or, I don’t know - it’s boring. Cream would be better.”

So it was back to the store on the next weekend to buy more paint, and the next few days were spent covering up the (barely dry) white paint with the new cream coating.

Until …

“Mary-”

She grinned and shrugged, a sheepish look on her face as she admitted to the fact that, well, cream wasn’t the right one, either.

“I think it needs to be blue,” she said.

John looked over at his wife.

“I thought you wanted the room to be neutral. What if it’s a girl?” he said, his gaze glancing down to her pregnant stomach.

But Mary just shook her head. “Not anymore,” she whispered. “You know, I’ve just got a feeling now that it’s going to be a boy.”

Next weekend, Mary and John went back to the store for the third - and final - time.

This time to buy the blue paint.
