It is quite cool outside in the night air as Sam stands in the middle of the deserted crossroads, just staring down at the body of the woman who had previously been host to the Crossroads Demon, the Colt held down loosely at his side. A few minutes pass by, the only sounds those one expects to hear on an autumn night, before he turns away and heads back to the car.
It’s not exactly a long drive back to the motel, but it isn’t a very short one, either. The drive is long enough, unfortunately, for the words of the Crossroads Demon to spin around, over and over, in Sam’s head …
“There’s no way out of this one.”
And he can’t get them to be quiet. He can’t shut them out.
“Not this time.”
All he can do is drive.
When he gets back to the motel, it’s still dark outside; he hasn’t been gone all that long, after all. Quietly slipping into the room, he glances over at Dean, who’s still asleep on the bed - exactly as he was when Sam left.
And Sam is pretty sure that Dean has no idea he even left in the first place. He’s pretty sure that his brother doesn’t know where Sam went tonight or what he did.
Not that he would apologize for any of it.
Not that Sam would ever stop trying to save his big brother.
No matter what anyone said.
Because if Dean gets to save him, he gets to save Dean.
That’s his job.

And that's it for now! All of my Supernatural work has now been posted up here - the writing work, anyway - and I'll see if I can get around to those pesky Harry Potter fan fics again.
