In the Forests of the Night by Murinae. Nearly a thousand years ago, Fujiwara no Sai died for the love of a game. But pasts don't always stay in the past, and even ghosts can be haunted too ... as Hikaru is about to find out.

This fic reads like a crossover between Hikaru no go, various Miyazaki films (Pom Poko and Spirited Away spring to mind) and Inuyasha. Oddly enough, it works pretty well, and I was engorssed in the story for most of it. It starts off slow, and I don't think the author should have relied on such a well known poem since it came off as kinda cliched every time I found it mentioned - but everything else was pretty good. An interesting plot, some pretty crazy go playing, good original characters etc. I really liked the deeper look you got at all the characters, especially Sai. Occasionally, I thought it might be ooc for Hikaru, but I'm also not that much of an expert on the kid (I just don't understand him that well.) so yeah. A really good, long Hikaru no Go fic that manages to cross over into the realm of fantasy and emerge largely intact.
