To Protect is to Defend by glacis. Ichigo learns a different lesson when Masaki is killed. He is also much more his mother's son than his father's. He, Uryuu, and Chad band together, and change everything they touch, in both Karakura and the Rukongai.

In order to tell the story of Ichigo's entire life, this story tells a lot rather than shows, but it does pause in the important places to show us what was happening. Overall, I enjoyed seeing a different version of their world where a couple of people died, but it all still worked out for the better. There are spoilers for the series after the winter war arc fyi.
