Title: Joe Normal
Author:
sembyWord count: 366
Disclaimer: I have zero power.
Characters/Pairing: Spike and some guy. (hints of B/S, B/A and B/other)
Summary: Spike gives some guy a "pep talk".
A/N: Written for
moviequoteminis, and the quote: "Still rooting for you, mate!" from Pirates of the Caribbean - which I changed around in words and meaning, quite a bit, but it was still the inspiration.
A/N2: I originally pictured Spike saying this stuff within a slightly bigger ficlet, but it grew and grew and eventually wanted to be the story on it's own. So it's in a weird format of Spike's voice directed at another person, but that's what it wanted to be.
I’ve got to tell you, you’ve complicated things here.
It’s always been me versus him, over everything. Only the last few years that it’s been me versus him over her, but it sticks with tradition. It feels right, in a way, even though I know it won’t feel completely right until I actually win. But as long as things are the way they always have been, I’m comfortable. I know what I’m up against. I know where I stand.
And we’ve left her alone for awhile, the both of us. Thought it was the best thing, what she wanted. But now we’ve come back onto the playing field only to discover that in our absence, it’s become me versus him versus you. You’ve complicated things, you really have.
And if I were a better man, still focused on what’s the best thing for her… Well, I’d be rooting for you, mate. But I’m not a better man. I’m a selfish man, and I want what I want. We’ve both brought her a lot of pain in the past, but I know that under the right circumstances, I could make her happy. I’d give anything to make her happy.
And maybe you’re good for her. You know about her late night activities, but you leave her to her own business. You’re cool about it, she tells me. And you have a steady day job, and a good family, and you take her out and you wine her and dine her, and bed her afterwards, I’m sure. You’re Mr. Fucking No Complications Perfect Joe Normal. And maybe that’s what she deserves. But it’s not what she wants, I can assure you.
She gets bored of normal, that one. You just wait.
I’ll let her make her choice. And I’ll wait as long as she needs. And if you think waiting and letting her decide means I’m up for playing fair, you’re kidding yourself. I’ll do whatever it takes.
So good luck to you, mate. I’m tough competition, and I’d never say it anywhere I thought he’d hear, but the dark avenger isn’t such a bad catch for her either.
I just hope you know she’s worth the fight.
