"He's mine?" Beckett wondered. She looked through the doorway at Castle. Really looked at him. And she smiled.
For the first time, everything that Lanie and everyone else had been telling her hit home. Somehow, she'd fallen in love with this stubborn, compassionate, charming man. And he was hers, she realized.
She rose from her desk and walked to where he still sat. "Can I ask you something?" she asked as she sat down beside him.
"Sure."
"Do you still think of her as the one that got away?"
He shook his head. "No." He paused, thinking. "How could she be? I'm sitting here with the woman who holds my heart. And I couldn't be happier."
Kate Beckett looked into his eyes and smiled. He didn't think he'd ever seen her look any happier than she did just then. "I love you, Kate Beckett."
Beckett wondered if it was possible for her heart to explode from happiness. "I love you, too."
Castle smiled and leaned over, gently brushing his lips across hers.
So lost in the moment, neither noticed the audience that had gathered outside the room. Captain Montgomery, Ryan and Esposito watched. "About damn time," Esposito voiced the thoughts of all.
"You can say that again," Ryan agreed.
"Come on. Let's give them some privacy," Captain Montgomery told them.
