Harm slowly came out of a deep sleep, but continued to lay there with his eyes closed. As he became more and more aware of his surroundings, he became aware of the wonderful smells assaulting his senses. Throwing off the blankets and getting out of bed, he followed his nose to the kitchen, where his wife was making breakfast.
"Good morning, sweetheart," he told her, slipping his arms around her slim waist and kissing her cheek.
She smiled. "Good morning, Harm," she told him, turning in his arms so she could look into his eyes.
"What smells so good?" he asked. "Besides you, I mean," he told her, a twinkle in his dark eyes.
She smiled at his playfulness and kissed him sweetly. That kiss, though, turned passionate. Pulling apart, he took her hand and led the way back to their bedroom, where he showed her just how much he loved her.
A few hours later she woke wrapped in his arms with her ear to his chest, listening to his heart. Looking up at him, she saw he was awake. He was watching her, his love for her shining in his eyes.
"Hi," she said, laying her palm on his cheek and kissing him.
"Do you have any idea how much I adore you?" he asked softly. His tender question brought tears to her eyes.
"I love you so much," she told him.
"I love you, too, Mac."
For the next hour, they just lay there, wrapped in each other's arms.
"Stay here. I'll be right back," Harm told her.
"Where are you going?"
"You'll see," he told her, rising. Pulling on a sweatshirt and sweatpants, he walked to the kitchen. Once there, he reheated their forgotten breakfast and poured them each a glass of milk. He pulled their bed tray down from the shelf and loaded their breakfast onto it. Walking into the living room, he retrieved two of Mac's favorite movies, Seabiscuit and Spiderman 2. Carrying them back to the kitchen, he put them on the tray as well. Picking up the tray, he walked back to their bedroom, where he noted that Mac was now similarily dressed as he.
"Cold?" he asked.
She nodded. "Yeah. I hate winter."
He laughed as he set down the tray and climbed back into bed with her.
"This will warm you up," he told her, handing her a fork.
She smiled as she took a bite of the sausage, gravy and biscuits he had reheated. "Mmm, this is good," she said.
He nodded his head in agreement. "You are a great cook, Mac." She smiled in appreciation.
Breakfast eaten, he carried the tray back to the kitchen and put the dishes in the dishwasher. While he was there, he decided to grab the bowl of fresh fruit out of the refrigerator for later.
Walking back to the bedroom, he saw Mac was curled under the blankets once again. She must really be cold, he thought.
"Do you want to watch a movie?" he asked, holding up the two he had brought in earlier.
"That sounds great," she said.
"Do you want to watch one of these or would you rather watch something else?"
"Spiderman 2 sounds good," she told him.
"Somehow I didn't think you'd turn down a chance to see that," he laughed, putting the movie into the DVD player.
Slipping back into bed beside her, he pulled her close, wrapping his arms around her, both to warm her and to snuggle with her.
For two hours the only sounds he heard were an occasional sigh or sniffle, depending on whether the movie plot was taking a happy or sad twist.
The movie ended and she turned in his arms to look at him. Putting her hand on his chest, she just looked into his eyes.
He captured her hand with his, bringing it to his mouth and kissing it. She smiled at his sweet gesture.
"What did I do to deserve you?" he asked.
"I could ask you the same thing," she told him, squeezing his hand in response.
"Do you think we would ever have gotten together if not for our reassignment commissions?" he asked.
"I don't know. I would like to think we would have, but after nine years it still took the threat of separation to do it."
He nodded his head in recognition of the truth of that statement.
"Remember our first meeting?" he asked.
She laughed. "How could I forget? I didn't think you wanted me at JAG."
"Why?" he asked.
"After Admiral Chegwidden introduced us, I went to shake your hand, but it took you so long to return the gesture, I was sure you didn't want me there."
"Mac, I've always wanted you with me."
"Then why did it take you so long to extend your hand that day?"
"In that moment, I knew you would change my life forever." She smiled at his words.
"You've changed mine, too. Before I met you, all I cared about was furthering my career in the Marine Corp. After I met and fell in love with you, all that mattered was you. I could lose everything tomorrow, but if I still had you, I'd still consider myself to be the luckiest woman alive."
"Oh, Mac," he said, clearly touched.
She looked at him adoringly and touched his lips with her own in a tender kiss.
Laying her head on his shoulder and snuggling with him once again, she closed her eyes, settling in for an afternoon nap. He looked at her, feeling like the luckiest man alive. He soon followed her lead, closing his eyes and following her into dreamland.
