Castle had come so close to losing her. They'd been searching an abandoned warehouse for their suspect when they'd gotten separated. When he'd peeked around the corner into the next room, it was all he could do to not go rushing into it. Their suspect held Beckett at gunpoint. He'd never been so scared in his life. A split second later, everything she'd taught him took over. He pointed the gun she'd given him at their suspect and fired. He'd only wounded the man, but it had given Beckett the distraction she'd needed to grab her gun and take control of the situation. She slapped handcuffs on him and called for backup.
An hour later, the last car pulled away from the warehouse, leaving them alone. Castle didn't say a word, simply cupped her face in his hands and pressed his lips to hers. It wasn't their first kiss and it wouldn't be their last, but it was, perhaps, their most emotional.
"I almost lost you," he finally whispered, voice full of emotion.
"I'm okay, Castle. We're okay." He nodded, but the image of Kate being held at gunpoint wouldn't leave his mind.
"Look at me," she told him, knowing what he was remembering.
He looked into her smiling face. "Don't focus on some psychopath whose only joy in life is terrorizing women."
"What should I do instead?"
"Think about me. Castle, I love you." She watched the sadness leave his eyes and joy replace it. It was the first time she'd told him what was in her heart.
"I love you, too. So much." With those words, he lowered his lips to hers in their second kiss of the night, but this one wasn't desperate or filled with misery. This one was filled with their love for each other.
