"Next exit," DD says, glancing up from the map to assess their location and rubbing tiredly at her eyes as she glances back down. They've been driving for nearly two hours, and it's been a long and difficult day. She doesn't find the joy in conning someone that Cassie does (next time, she swears she's making sure Shane goes with her instead) and one of De Marco's thugs landed several solid punches that she's now aching from. She wants to be home.
Cassie hears her but doesn't listen, driving past the turning, taking the next one instead, and DD looks up in mild alarm, flattening the map across her knees as she double-checks where they're going.
"Cassie, we should have turned back there." She sighs as she lets her head fall back against the headrest, knowing their day is going to get longer if they get lost or side-tracked. "You need to turn round."
"I know," Cassie looks over at her, offering a brief smile. This day's been hard on DD and Cassie knows that; she's been nothing but sweet and supportive since they left. "But there's a nice place we can have dinner at, just up here, and we could both use some coffee because we've got at least another hour to go."
"Jack said, 'Come straight back'," DD points out, but the idea of going for dinner clearly appeals to her. She's starving, and coffee would be good right now.
"I don't think he'll mind," Cassie replies, making a mental note to talk to Jack when they finally do get back. "We're not going to be hours late, Deeds, and we can always tell him we got lost."
"I don't think spies are supposed to get lost, Cass," DD says in amusement, as Cassie pulls the Jeep into a parking lot. She glances at the restaurant in front of them with interest; she's never been here before but it looks like a nice place, and she already knows the company will be good.
"C'mon, we'll be able to make Jack to buy into it." Cassie shrugs, unconcerned, as she slides out of the Jeep, waiting until DD does the same before she locks it and guides DD towards the restaurant doors.
DD lets herself be guided inside, and orders a drink from the bar while they wait to be seated. Both of them are quiet, but it's a comfortable silence and DD's able to relax for the first time in hours. She's perfectly capable of lying and cheating if she has to but she doesn't enjoy it, and it almost always makes her feel guilty, even when she's conning the bad guy.
Nothing ever keeps her down for long though, her cheerful optimism slowly reasserting itself as they make their way through starters and main courses, and she's fully herself again by the time they're ordering coffee and deciding to split dessert. She always enjoys Cassie's company, and Cassie always seems to relax in hers so it works out well for them both. She's close to Shane too, but its different with Cassie, though she's not prepared to voice why that is yet.
After they've finished their coffee, Cassie pays the bill and they head back to the car, their footsteps loud in the twilight silence. DD hugs her and whispers thank you, smiling when, after a moment, Cassie hugs her back, and then they're on their way again.
Relaxed now, and sleepy from the food, DD drifts off to sleep, while Cassie drives and occasionally glances over at DD with affection in her eyes. DD sleeps for most of the journey, waking as Cassie takes a final exit that leaves them ten minutes from home.
"We're nearly there," Cassie says unnecessarily, as DD blinks sleepily. She looks adorable and younger than usual as she rubs her eyes and shifts to get comfortable.
"You should have woken me," DD yawns, feeling guilty that Cassie's done all the driving while she slept away the time. "I could have kept you company."
"I thought you needed to sleep more," Cassie says as they round a corner and their apartment appears in front of them. "It's okay."
DD smiles at her, staying quiet as Cassie pulls the Jeep into its assigned parking space and kills the engine. This day has really only been tolerable for her because she's had Cassie to guide her through it; always there when she needed reassurance, which she sometimes does need more than she ever likes to admit.
"Ready to go report to Jack?" Cassie asks, hand resting on the door handle.
"As I'll ever be," DD replies.
