turtle_goose and I decided that collabing would be the most epic thing ever. So we're going to have a drabble-duel! Which is basically me writing something, then her adding to it, then me adding to hers...and so on. And I guess we'll keep going until the story gets tired. Getting us started, here is what I think of as the prologue...
"I'm sure if we explain to him, very cool and logical-like..."
Zoë looked at Mal as though he'd sprouted an extra head. "You really think he'll listen, sir?"
"No," Mal responded dejectedly. "But as it is, we ain't got enough fuel to leave Persephone." He covered his face with his hand and sighed. "There's got to be some way."
Zoë looked thoughtful for a moment. "There is something, sir," she said. Mal looked at her expectantly.
She hesitated. "Last time he was aboard, he showed a particular likin' for...well, for River."
"An' you're suggestin' what, exactly?"
"Maybe we could offer..."
"No ruttin' way!"
Zoë rolled her eyes. "I didn't mean that, sir. Just thinkin' that Badger might take a bit more kindly to us if he got the idea that River had taken a likin' to him, too."
Mal grimaced. "I couldn't do that to little River."
"Sir..."
"But we ain't got much choice."
"She is more than capable of handling herself, and if it was for the good of the crew...I don't think she'd refuse, sir."
"You're right," Mal said, after a while. "You're right!" He sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose between his fingers. He only hoped they could get through this without further mishap.
"Let's not tell the Doc about this, all right? Don't want him blowin' a gasket any more'n I want Serenity to."
Take it away,
turtle_goose!
