Brownies .1.

“These taste kinda weird.”
“You don’t like them?”
“No! They’re great, really.” Danny makes a point of finishing the rest of the brownie -from a batch CJ had pulled out of the oven just as he’d gotten home after a pizza run -in the biggest single bite he could manage. She’d smiled then, a kind of eerie smile that didn’t make too much sense, and placed a fresh one in front of him.
“Good. I’m glad I made them.” She’d rubbed his forearm as he’d swallowed, then went ahead and got started on her own brownie, seemingly not at all affected by the bizarre, earthy taste that he’d picked up on under the layers of chocolate. It tasted a little bit like chewing on a Hershey bar laced with incense, but he wasn’t about to bring that up, not when she’d seemed so happy that he’d approved of her desert-before-dinner plan.
Instead, he pushed through the second brownie, figuring that if she made it through his tuna casserole, he could deal with her dessert venture. As soon as that one was gone, she’d put another one in it’s place, which he found odd up until he realized that she was already partway through brownie number four.
“At this rate, I’m not gonna want any pizza,” he’d joked. CJ had just smiled that same eerie smile, rubbed his arm, and cut another brownie.
“Oh, I think you will.”
