Word Count: 760
Summary: A tear or two was also shed but they blended in with the sweat tears that were flowing down his flawless complexion so no one noticed.
Notes: Idea from the weekly prompt on here. This was supposed to be a happy fic but it turned out to be kinda sadish. A little at least.
David had tied and retied his shoes more times than he could count as he stood near the starting point. He told himself to leave them alone so the shoestrings wouldn't break halfway through his run. His run being the 5K run/walk Race For Hope. The race he'd been training hard for. He wasn't in the best of shape when he ran the year before and this year he wanted to prove to himself he could kick it up a notch. Discipline himself to get in shape and complete the entire race and in a respectable time. The race that meant so much to him, to his family. The race he almost didn't run last year but he did anyway and with a heavy heart for that matter because that's the way Adam would have wanted it and David knew that.
As David stood in the sea of people he felt like he belonged. That he was just a normal guy running for a good cause, for a cure, just like everyone else that surrounded him at that moment. When he looked around at the crowd watchers, he wondered how many of those people he had met when he was on tour; he often thought of that. He knew his family would be waiting at the finish line. Practically his entire family had flown in to witness this feat of his. They'd be there supporting him and cheering him on like they always did. But one of his biggest supporters was missing. Kelly was in another part of the world touring. He understood that, he did, but he just wished she was there encouraging him every step of the way and honestly, he missed her, he missed her like crazy. About as soon as that thought entered his mind, it left just as quickly; it wasn't the time for thoughts like that. That's not what this day was about.
The runners were given the signal and they were off. Each one in step with each other. It was almost like a melody with the sound of the soles hitting the pavement. It made David smile.
Everyone involved was so encouraging; whether they were the participants, the spectators or the volunteers. They rooted each other on almost like a family. There were a few times when David felt like he couldn't possibly take another step but then he would hear the cheers and he knew he had to keep going. He had to fight to the end. He did stop for a brief moment though. He went off to the side, out of the way of the other runners, to catch his breath. As he was bent over with his hands resting on his knees, he swore he felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked to his side but no one was there. He told himself that he imagined it. He straightened himself up and rejoined the runners. But as he was running, he couldn't help but think about the little hand incident.
The race was nearing the end. A handful of runners had already crossed the finish line while the rest were still going strong.
David could see the finish line. His goal was almost complete. Just a few more feet and he could collapse. He saw him family clapping and cheering him on during his final steps. He had to look twice at the brunette standing next to his mom. He couldn't believe it. He couldn't believe Kelly actually showed up. She was supposed to be traveling to South Korea for her next show. He couldn't help but smile. He didn't deserve her. He continued to stare at his family. The people he loved more than anything else in the world. The people who have supported him with every decision he has ever made in his life and will make. Then he saw something. Something that wasn't possible. Adam was standing amongst his family with a smile that went on for miles. He looked peaceful, happy even. And it made David happy knowing his brother was peacefully happy. He felt like his breath was taken from him at that very moment. A tear or two was also shed but they blended in with the sweat tears that were flowing down his flawless complexion so no one noticed.
A few seconds later, he crossed that finish line and was embraced by his loved ones. Well, except for one. Adam stood alone watching his family like he had been for the past year, experiencing every moment just like this one.
