IMPROVING!

Fanfic's a learning process, and I don't think anyone starts out writing exactly how they'd like to. SO! I was wondering: how do you guys improve? What do you think helps one's writing style evolve? Getting a thoughtful beta? Trying things outside one's comfort zone? Asking for concrit? Just lots of practice? Something else ( Read more... )

First, how do I improve?
I try to listen to the concrit I get and when writing a new fic, I focus on the things that I was criticised for (right now I am trying to get rid of my unhealthy addiction to epithets).
Practice is a lot of help, too. I can´t say that the newer fic the better, but practice certainly helps.
English is not my native language and therefore part of my improvement process is improving my English - learning new vocabulary and improving my grammar. I doubt I will ever be an amazing author, even if I got rid of all the other faults of my writing, because expressing oneself in a foreign language is quite limiting, but I will do my best.
When it comes to style, I don´t experiment because I want to experiment - I do it because certain format seems to fit the story I want to tell.

What differentiates amazing fic from good fic?
That´s difficult question. There are bad fics, enjoyable fics, good fics, amazing fics... but how do you define them?
For me, amazing fic is one that has a lasting effect. If hours or even days after reading it it is haunting me or making me giggle at inappropriate times (and not because it was that ridiculous ;) ), I will call it amazing.
Amazing fic has good plot, natural sounding dialogues, original language and an ending that will leave craving more. In fanfiction it is also important that the characters are in character.
