Adam didn't think it was possible for one more thing to go wrong in his life than what was already happening. And it wasn't just with regard to romance, it was across the board.
His family life was ridiculous. He wasn't seeing them anywhere near enough and people who Adam couldn't remember the names of at family reunions were now coming out of the woodwork to say, "I knew him when..."
Sure, he wanted to be famous and he knew there was going to be some backlash and stuff that he really didn't enjoy. But sometimes he just wished he could have an hour where no one knew him again, just to be normal. To go to the grocery store, or go to a concert without immediately having a swarm of people around him.
Adam hated when people just complained about their lives, and he was trying his best not to do that. But when his whole existence revolved around work it just wasn't good for him.
He would have called Kris or one of his friends who knew what this was like, but Kris was just as busy as Adam was, without a second to come up for air. His album was coming out a week before Adam's, so he was that much closer to the craziness that would ensue. Or the craziness that Adam hoped would ensue for Kris. He didn't like being the sole recipient for insane amounts of attention. Some was fine, but it got out of control with his fans.
Adam knew that while Kris had won the competition, he didn't have the same kind of intense fans that Adam did. He wished it was possible to share a little bit of the love and the excitement with the other finalists instead of having it heaped upon his own shoulders.
His life was going crazy and Adam had no chance to breathe. That was the simple truth. He had no idea when he would even be free to go home for a holiday or a vacation or anything similar again.
Adam had thought he knew what he was getting into when he auditioned. For the most part, he did. But he didn't fully realize that his life would no longer be his once he stepped on that stage and started to sing for those judges.
Now, he belonged to America. His face, his smile, his voice, his music. He was a product, and Adam was keenly aware of that. Most days he was okay with it, but sometimes, he just wished he were anonymous again so he could just get a taste of normal life again.
Right now, he barely remembered what normal life felt like.
He needed someone who wasn't afraid to say no to him and tell him an idea was totally ridiculous. He needed someone who knew that as a kid he refused to eat anything green. Who knew that before his first big solo, Adam had been so excited he almost missed his entrance, and that was after he'd been so nervous he had almost thrown up all over everyone.
He needed someone who knew the real Adam.
The one who was a little chubby, and had red hair and freckles and bad skin, and was just a weird kid.
They only knew the version of himself that would sell - decked out in eyeliner and hair dye and everything that was flashy.
Adam wanted to have a chance to go home, so he could let the kid hiding under all the layers and get some of the same love his famous side got.
That's who he was inside. And that was who really needed the love.
