Cracking Up

Adam had done behemoth amounts of press after the finale wrapped, and he knew it would only get worse from here. It wasn't the worst thing. But he had gotten exactly two hours of sleep the last two nights, first because he was nervous as hell for the coronation song that seemed to be written for Danny and no one else, because neither he nor Kris could sing it well. The night before he hadn't slept well simply because he was so excited, and exhausted beyond the point of sleep.

He worked the room, knowing the more efficiently he got to everyone, the quicker he would be done. Hopefully.

So, he answered the same questions again. How did he feel when Kris won? What could they expect from Adam now that the show was over? Wasn't he disappointed? Even just a little? Adam wore a professional smile and addressed each question as graciously as possible.

He was talking about Kris when Adam suddenly felt himself being hugged from behind. He knew without looking that it was Kris, and Adam breathed a sigh of relief. There was something grounding about seeing a familiar face in the sea of reporters and cameras. Plus, Adam had the satisfaction of knowing that Kris knew exactly how he was feeling because he was going through it, too.

So, he turned hugged Kris back, asking if he was tired. It was a ridiculous question. They were both ready to turn in before their group number at the beginning of the night, if not for the adrenaline both were feeling.

Adam pulled Kris close, speaking lowly so the cameras couldn't pick up what was said. "I swear, if this doesn't end soon, I'm gonna just curl up on the floor and go to sleep."

"We should," Kris agreed. "What would they do, then, I wonder?" he asked, swaying a little.

"Whoa," Adam said softly, steadying him. "You know, more than 18 hours awake impairs your judgement so much it's like you're legally drunk... Apparently, it impairs your gait, too," he teased.

"Where'd you get that?" Kris asked, though he could see how it would be true.

"I don't remember. Law & Order, or something?"

Kris giggled, too tired to care about the pressure or the bigger picture or whether or not his reaction was right after his name was announced.

Still holding onto Kris, Adam joined his friend in cracking up. He knew that these were the important decisions in life. Not deciding which record-label to go with, or what to have for breakfast, but deciding to laugh at the little moments, instead of letting himself be swallowed by the bigger picture.
