"Okay, who drank the last of the milk?" Danny exclaimed.
Kris pulled a pillow over his head. They didn't have to be up yet, and Kris was planning on taking full advantage of that fact before Danny started carrying on about there being no milk. Even in his half-asleep state, Kris knew enough to keep his mouth shut. If you used up the last of something, it was best to keep quiet, or risk being at the bottom of a dog-pile, and there were few things Kris enjoyed less.
"Seriously?" Michael asked. "I can't eat my Kix with no milk! Come on and own up. Who drank the last of it? Somebody's gotta go shopping."
"If I say I did it, will you two shut up?" Adam groaned.
"Did you?" Michael asked.
"Yeah. So?" Adam answered, though he hadn't had milk since he was in high school. It was bad for his voice, and he was pretty sure he was lactose intolerant - which sucked - but was easily remedied by avoiding dairy products.
"Out of bed, Sleeping Beauty!" Matt crowed, dumping Adam out of his bunk.
Even half-conscious, Adam managed to snag one of Matt's retreating legs and take him to the floor of the bus, pinning him there. The look in Matt's eye had Adam sure he found the milk-drinker, but he was too tired to rat him out.
It was still early, only about 6:00 AM, but when their driver, Walter, pulled into a gas station, Adam slipped on a gray sweatshirt, some sandals and some sunglasses, and made his way inside to buy milk, so he wouldn't have to hear them bitching about it all the way to the next city.
He pulled the hood of his sweatshirt up as he walked inside the little store. Adam was right when he assumed that no one in their right mind would be shopping or buying gas at this time of the morning. He made his way to the back of the store and found the refrigerated section. Blindly, he selected a random gallon and walked through the aisles, picking up things for everyone. Water, Twizzlers for Allison, jelly beans for Lil and Megan, Cheetos, Funyuns, Doritos and graham crackers for the guys' bus. He found Starbursts for Kris and Fig Newtons for himself, which Adam gladly picked up. He hadn't seen Fig Newtons for years, and he hadn't eaten them in as long.
Bringing up his groceries, he put them on the counter. Adam went back once for a Special Dark Hershey's bar for Scott, and again, to get coffee for Walter, who had driven at odd hours all through the tour and never complained.
Finally, Adam was ready to pay, and did so with cash. The woman behind the counter didn't recognize him, and wished him a nice day. Adam said, "You, too," and hurried out.
It didn't matter that their bus was the size of a large beast and took years to fill up with gas, everybody always acted like they were waiting on whoever went inside to pee or pick up something.
"What did you buy?" Scott asked tiredly.
"Holy shit! He bought out the whole damn store!" Anoop announced gleefully, jumping down from his bunk.
Adam made sure that the stuff meant for individuals went to them, and then let the guys invade the bags for chips and Cheetos, despite the fact that it was still so early. Adam crawled back in bed with his Fig Newtons, and reached up to lay the Starbursts next to Kris, who slept through everything.
He peeked out once, to see how everyone was faring, mostly because they ate like a bunch of cattle. Adam rolled his eyes as he spotted the milk still untouched in the bag.
"Someone put the damn milk away!" he exclaimed. "I didn't buy snacks so you could let it spoil."
"Thanks, Adam," Walter called from the front of the bus.
"Thanks, Adam," the other guys mumbled, and Danny got up to pour milk on his graham crackers.
