In the Coming Hours
Charles has never thought too much about the future. There would be a day, of course, when the world learned about mutants, and there would be difficult times before the dawn of acceptance. It was always fuzzy, though, always far-off and far away, and there was always something more important to think about in the here and now.
And then he met Erik.
Erik is...like no one else he's ever encountered. Charles knows this man, inside and out, has seen the man's deepest hopes and deepest fears and understood them all, and yet - and yet Erik remains an enigma. Just when Charles thinks he knows what to say to make him listen, what to do to make him stay, Erik goes and makes him think he doesn't have to say anything at all.
Charles still doesn't know what will happen. They have to find Shaw and stop a nuclear apocalypse. There's an apocalypse coming either way - an apocalypse of the mind, with Erik at the helm. Mutants are going to come out, sooner rather than later, and they're not going to be quiet about it. Charles doesn't know how it will turn out, how long it will take for the humans to accept them. Charles only knows that he and Erik - together, they can make the world a better place.
Together, they can do anything.
Charles still doesn't know the future, but sometimes he thinks he can see glimpses of it. And it is fucking brilliant.
