Plans
Paralysis was unfortunate.
Charles had too much to do; he would have to hire people, devise new ways to train the children. He’d had nebulous plans in his mind, when they started, for fortifying the school, making up defensive plans. Plans that had always involved Erik.
He would have to adapt. Take a leaf from Darwin’s book.
Elevators would be first, of course. Ramps, wheelchair-accessible doors, bathrooms, flat carpets or wooden floors; in a way, this could lead to some good things. Charles hadn’t thought of any of the children being disabled; he would have to make sure anyone could be accommodated.
Raven would have liked that. Remodeling. She’d always liked decorating and making everything feel lived-in. Charles wondered if she genuinely enjoyed it, or if it had been a part of trying to be normal.
Moira would have to go, of course. She wouldn’t tell the government anything, but they could still use her. Erik could threaten her. Charles could not allow that. Would not allow that.
He had so much to do; so much to plan. Everything would have to be rethought; he’d have to train someone to replace him on missions, before they could even think of defending anyone from Erik - least of all themselves.
Paralysis, Charles thought, could not have come at a more unfortunate time, but he wouldn’t let it stop him. Couldn’t if he wanted to. He’d just have to learn to live with it and work around it, like others had done before him. He could do it. It would give him something more to do.
And maybe, if he had enough to do, he wouldn’t have the time to think of what might have been.
