Hope
It was quiet here. There was the sound of water, running somewhere in the distance. Some birds. People training with wooden swords.
It was warm here, too. He was covered in blankets, swathed in something soft and comfortable. He was, oddly, lying on his back, his arms straight at his sides on top of the blankets. His hair had been pushed away from his face, and there was a moist cloth on his forehead.
Fai opened his eyes slowly, disoriented. He was alive.
He was alive.
And for the first time in years, the thought did not make him unhappy.

Touch
The magician’s skin was just like Kurogane had imagined it. Soft, well taken care of. So pale as to almost be translucent. Kurogane could see the blue veins traveling from thighs to hips to back to neck, and he traced them with his finger, lightly.
Fai squirmed under his touch. He was lying on his stomach, arms flung out above his head, fingers curling into the linen sheets. There were distinct finger-shaped bruises already forming on his hips from earlier.
Kurogane smiled and drew Fai closer and breathed into the magician’s hair. It smelled of dandruff shampoo.
Kurogane was content.

Déja Vu
It felt familiar; the way his hand grasped hers, strong but gently, the way he took off fast and ran faster, faster, until Sakura’s feet left the ground and she was almost flying, nothing but the wind making tangles in her hair and Syaoran, always, laughing and running on steadily.
But most of all, it was feeling safe and happy and absolutely comfortable that was most familiar. The way Syaoran made her feel now - that was the way, in any memory she picked, she felt with the person from her past.
That person must have been as kind as Syaoran.

Promise
“You had another nightmare,” Kurogane says.
Syaoran picks at his food. “I’ll find her,” he says. “I’ll find both of them.”
There are raspberries on his plate. He’s never tasted them before, but Sakura and the - other - used to sit on the stairs by the guardhouse and eat together.
They taste delicious; the juice spurts when he bites one and drips like blood down his shirt.
There’s always blood in his nightmares. He dreams of trying to save Sakura - both Sakuras - and failing.
“Don’t let nightmares distract you.”
“I’ll find them,” he says again, with determination. “I’ll save them both.”

Contentment
“Are you happy?” Comes the question, deliberate and inevitable as usual.
Fai sighs and traces the outline of the cloth covering his eye. Kurogane’s hand is tight around his stomach; they’re so close together Fai can feel Kurogane’s chest rise and fall and rise and fall with every heavy, steady breath, can feel Kurogane’s lips against his shoulder, can feel the throbbing pulse as every thump, thump, thump of Kurogane’s heart sends the life-sustaining blood rushing through his veins.
It’s a torrent of loud, bewildering noise, but Kurogane stays silent and awaits an answer.
“Yes, Kuro-sama,” Fai says. “I’m happy.”
