DRABBLE: The Art of Losing

Nov 25, 2010 19:31

Title: The Art of Losing
Fandom: Doctor Who
Ship: None
Rating: G
Word Count: 100
Warnings: None
Summary: Loss is one of the few things the Doctor can never master.
Notes: I don't remember when I wrote this, but it's been sitting in my Doctor Who fic folder complete for ages. The italicised line is from Elizabeth Bishop's "One Art" and inspired the whole thing. Also, it's not any particular Doctor, I'm just using an Eight icon because I can.

Whenever he loses a companion, the Doctor wonders when it will be too much. He puts on a strong face, wishes them well, and knows that there will always be new friends to be lost.

The art of losing isn't hard to master.

But that's not true, the Doctor knows, because losing is the one thing he can never accept. He refuses, time and again, to look it squarely in the face, and it is wholly selfish and the most cowardly thing in all the universes that ever will be and never even were.

He never claimed to be brave.
