"Hey bro, you up here?" Bolin called out, ascending the small wooden set of stairs that led to the attic.
The door was slightly ajar, but the earth bender could see Mako's form through the crack, sitting hunched over on the patched-together lounge chair. His head low, and leaning forward elbows on knees and his fingers laced loosely together. His expression was stoic as ever, but the emotion in his golden-coloured eyes spoke in volumes.
"Mako, you ok?" Bolin prompted again, opening the door all the way and leaning his arm against the frame.
"Just... mulling things over." Mako answered after what seemed like an eternity of silence. Bolin let out a chuckle.
"Yeah? What else is new?" He cracked, trying to lighten his brother's mood, though it proved unsuccessful.
"We're nearly at the finals, bro. I'm just a little overwhelmed." Mako tried to explain, but in truth he wasn't entirely sure that it was accurate.
"It shows, you aren't your usual broody self. I mean - yeah, you're still broody, but now you're just silent. It's kind of unnerving."
Mako raised his head and shot him a disapproving glare, Bolin would have laughed it off it he hadn't known that Mako had been so stressed out about the upcoming finals. The fire bender ran a hand through his hair and exhaled deeply. "I guess I just don't fully grasp it yet. For the first time in a long time, it seems like everything's going right and that... that creeps the hell out of me. I keep waiting for the other coin to drop."
Bolin moved off the frame and sat down next to Mako, slapping him on the shoulder encouragingly.
"Hey," The younger brother began, oddly serious and firm. "We earned this, brother. We got here, and the finish line is only a couple of hurdles away." Bolin pointed over yonder for dramatic emphasis, his eyes focused on his brother's profile.
A bright grin spread across his lips and he slapped Mako's shoulder again. "So cheer up, relax for a change!"
Mako shook his head. "A couple more hurdles, huh?" He couldn't help but let a smile tug at his lips at Bolin's optimism.
"Just a couple more hurdles." Bolin parroted, "And when we get the prize money, we're hitting the tavern. My treat."
Mako shook his head, leaning back. Bolin had been pleased when he saw his older brother's expression had lightened a fraction. "The Tavern? I don't know bro. It's not really my scene."
"And a spectacular return to normal brooding form." The young earth bender laughed.
Mako rolled his eyes, his arm hooked around Bolin's neck and pulled him close in an impromptu hug with his hand ruffling his hair. "Thanks for the pep talk, bro."

"What would you do without me?" Bolin smiled.
