A shift in the shadows on the floor drew his attention to the smallish window set along one wall. It was barred. A prison, then, Tarrlok thought. He shifted his gaze back to the ceiling and thought of nothing in particular. Presently, he heard steps outside the door. It opened to reveal a harried-looking older woman in the light blue tunic of a professional healer, followed by a wide-eyed orderly carrying a basin of water. The healer noticed Tarrlok, and spared him a brief smile. "You're awake then. How are you feeling?"
Tarrlok had no reply, so he simply watched as the orderly set the basin to his right. The healer - Sedna, according to the cloth name tag sewn to her uniform - did not seem to mind his silence, and continued talking. "We're going to do a healing session, which should help with the pain. There's not much we can do about the scarring, unfortunately; your injuries were very severe when they found you in the water".
The orderly began unwinding the bandages along his arm, and Sedna pulled the water up over the red angry skin beneath. Something was off, and it took Tarrlok a few seconds staring at the undulating water to realize what it was: half his right arm was missing, simply gone below the elbow. A vision of sparks and white-hot brightness hit him, sudden and overwhelming. It must have shown in his expression, for Sedna said, "I'm sorry about your arm, Councilman. I know it's a shock, but there was simply nothing left to save."
Councilman caught his attention. Grateful for the distraction, he repeated, "Councilman?" His voice was hoarse from disuse. "I think you're mistaken. I'm no longer a member of Republic City's council"
"Oh you are!", the wide-eyed orderly exclaimed. "There was an emergency meeting when the UF guys found you and everyone heard how you'd pretended to go against the Council in order to infiltrate the Equalists because Amon was your brother and when he found out he threw you in prison and-"
"Kamik,"Sedna interrupted crisply, "no chattering at patients". The orderly looked embarrassed and mumbled an apology.
"What he means to say is that word of your adventures has gotten out-"
"There was a big story in the paper!" Kamik interjected, subsiding at another look from Sedna. She continued, "…and there's been a great deal of interest and publicity since your return. There is another council member waiting to see you who can probably give you all the details. If you're up for visitors, that is."
He nodded assent, and sat quietly as they finished up and rewrapped his arm and torso with new bandages. As they were leaving the orderly looked back - apparently unable to contain himself - and said with reverence, "You're the hero of Republic City, sir."
