I'm between writing projects right now, so I've been reading a lot. More specifically, I read the first three Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants books between Tuesday and today. (And I know the biggest spoiler in the fourth book, so feel free to discuss at will if you wanna.) Holy crap, Anne Brashares is incredible at getting the way girls befriend and fight with each other.
Lena: Quite honestly exasperates me, and all the more so when she's mooning about over Kostos. I don't think that anything was ever really difficult for her to achieve before, so she spins this big, romantic tragedy out of what is really a pretty common occurrence (exacerbated by the fact that Kostos is an emotionally manipulative, cowardly douchebag--oh, when he
throws out the ring that he was going to give to Lena, not out of grief, but because he's pissed that she dared to reject him, it entered outright hateboner territory ).
Carmen: I love her and want her to be Catherine Zeta Jones. I honestly cheered on her behavior far more than I probably should have in the first book because I empathized with having a faulty daddy so much. Hers was much more decent than mine, but I honestly would not have blamed her for wreaking more havoc than that.
Tibby: My feelings on Tibby are complicated, largely because I see SO MUCH of myself in her, so the cringing is extra-hard when her flaws come into play. Tibby is capable of some of the most loyal, generous, and kind gestures, and yet when she breaks bad? HOLY SHIT. Tibby gives me all the feels, basically, and I get something in my eye like freaking clockwork any time that Bailey comes back into play.
Bridget: I did not expect to love Bee like I do, because she belongs to a character type that generally leaves me pretty cold, but OMG BEE. "Bee's car has no brakes" is so apt, and yet it's not that Bridget is reckless. (Okay. Bridget is still pretty reckless.) She has this self-destructive side where she thinks she has to punish herself somehow for
not being lovable enough to keep her mother from committing suicide , and ugh. I alternately want to save her from herself and egg her on until she becomes a lady Indiana Jones.
