Criminal Minds 7.02

Icon has nothing to do with anything, except that I'm getting back into The Mentalist and Teresa and Patrick are pretty when they're all swanked up.

Better than Season 6? Oh, fuck yeah, it was, though that's admittedly a low bar to clear. At least Prentiss and JJ are back, and I'm glad that JJ is now a full profiler. (Not because Garcia or JJ did "lesser" jobs before, but KV mentioned going on the crappy spinoff in the first place because CM was only giving her one day a week of work, so anything that keeps Penelope as a full cast member...)

I don't know what to make of this ep, I honestly don't. I thought the unsub's brain injury came thisclose to outright fetishizing when it didn't cross the line, though the show did remember its roots and swing back around to back it clear that it was the unsub's damage, not the fault of the woman who rejected him.

On the personal issues aspect of the case: look, I love that they're a family. I can understand that the cases eat up enough of their lives that they kind of have to deal with personal issues in the middle of cases. I have trouble, however, believing that two people as veteran as Hotch and Rossi would be teasing each other about cooking lessons and team morale in the middle of a pretty grim torture case. (While Garcia and Rossi prior to the case, however, worked fine.) I actually did get why Reid was angrier at JJ than at Prentiss and Hotch. JJ is his biffle, Hotch is his superior. Emily is a member of the Geeker Triumvirate, but she was also recovering physically and carrying a heavy load herself. Since Reid specifically went to JJ's house over and over again for two and a half months grieving for Prentiss, I can see why he was upset over more than her ability to cover her micro-expressions at the hospital. I also wasn't entirely surprised over his throwing his addiction at her, because, well: this is Spencer Reid. His bitch-button is pretty specific, all things considered, but he holds no prisoners when it's stepped upon and he lashes out. (Emily and Derek bothered me on the first watch-through and still doesn't make me entirely happy, but they're both so good at compartmentalizing and SM in particular was playing Derek as so hesitant and willing to follow cues that I'm willing to take it for now. I'm pretty much rationalizing Garcia's being A-OK with JJ for the same reason: Penelope wants the family to be together and happy. She'll overlook a lot to get that.) I don't like that last scene. At all.

I tried to give Person of Interest a shot, since I like Michael Emerson and Taraji P. Henson (though I didn't even realize that she was in the show until she started raising hell about the promos, so way to go, CBS!) and at least have no particular negative feelings towards Jim Caviezel, but wow: try a little harder to hit every last one of Batman's vices and none of his virtues, guys. (It's even in the way that Caviezel delivers his lines!) I tried to take it as the SRS BSNZ that it wanted to be, but couldn't make it through one full hour without giggling.
