River scooted closer to the wall as the girl got up and looked around the room. “Who are you?”
The girl cocked her head and touched the wall. “Such plain surroundings for extraordinary children. Alliance sure does skimp.”
River curled her knees into her chest and squeezed her eyes shut. “I don’t know how you got in here, but you have to get out. Otherwise...”
“My name’s Brenna.”
She slowly opened her eyes and looked at her knees. “Little Raven. Celtic...”
Brenna turned around and started to walk over to River. “I didn’t know that. I do think it fits though. Very dark and mysterious.”
“Get out. Now.”
River turned her head sharply to see the little girl standing on the bed, her bear dangling from her hand. “Why are you here?”
The little girl pointed at Brenna and said, “I’m trying to keep her away from you. She’s no good.”
“Oh, isn’t she sweet,” cooed Brenna as she bent over and pinched the little girl’s cheek. “Still so young and desperate for attention!”
The little girl slapped Brenna’s hand away and hissed, “Stay away from River. She’s done nothing.”
River stepped off the bed and started going for the door, but Brenna slid in front of her. “Now, where are you going? You can’t leave without me.”
“W-why not?”
Brenna smiled and felt River’s face. “Cause I have some big plans. We’re gonna shake it up. You just have to stick with me.”
The little girl jumped off the bed and started tugging on River’s gown. “River...don’t go with her. Just come back to bed. This will all be over...”
River yanked her gown away from the girl and went back to her bed. “Can’t I just be left alone? I never wanted any of this!”
Brenna pushed past the girl and sat next to River. She touched River’s hand, but River yanked it back and curled back up. Brenna whined and said, “This is a terrible prologue to the night.”
The little girl snorted and tossed her bear at Brenna. “Prologue? This is a girl your messing with! This is m-”
“I’m not you,” hissed River, “We are not connected. Stop saying that!”
Brenna shook her head and reached into her pocket, pulling out a pair of gloves. She slipped them on ever so delicately and looked back at River. “I’ll be your eyes tonight. Just let me be the narrator. Let’s get out of here...”
River looked up at Brenna. “What will we see?”
“I don’t know,” she said, giving a shrug, “Trophy boys and wives. Impostors that call themselves artists. It’s all depending on you.”
“That door is locked from both sides,” said River, focusing on the door. “Only those with card clearance can get through. They call us dangerous. So, we’re barred until they want us.”
All of a sudden, the door clicked open and creaked open ever so slightly. Brenna stood up and looked at River. “C’mon. The doctors will never know...”
“River. Don’t.”
River shot a glare at the girl. “You...who has been tormenting me?”
“Torment? I was trying to help. Like I’m trying to do now.”
River wasn’t listening though. She grabbed Brenna’s hand and got up from her bed. Brenna gave her sinister grin and lead River to the door. Pushing it aside like it was no problem, she then stepped out and grabbed a cane and top hat that were laying by the door. Placing the top hat on her head, she gestured down the hall. “Shall we?”
“River! Please...stay here. For your own good.”
River ignored the girl and reached for the door. Pulling on the handle, she slowly closed the heavy door behind her. The girl started beating on the door and screaming, but River pretended not to hear as Brenna pulled River beside her. “Don’t worry, River. Tonight will be lots of fun...”
